Can we all just take a minute to think about and recognize Dazai’s reaction if Atsushi is the one transfered to the port mafia?

All I’ve been able to think about recently is how much Dazai would blame himself. He’s failed another one of his mentees. He didn’t really save another orphan for Oda. The only thing he did was prolong the inevitable.

I think in a way, it might also force Dazai to start to re-assign where he places his own allegiance and who he remains loyal to after those he trusts and cares for all move so far away from him.

He’s already failed Akutagawa, something which Dazai undoubtedly has mixed feelings about given how loyal Akutagawa has remained to Dazai through all their years, and now the person he was using as a form of redemption has left him.

I also think it’ll all be worse if Dazai were ever to see Atsushi kill, or if Atsushi’s introductory clothing item was a coat like Akutagawa. In that way, I think it’d be a sort of final bell informing Dazai that he had properly and totally failed. That his redemption was worth nothing because he couldn’t even save one person he cared about from the mafia.

He might even see a bit of himself in Atsushi, depending on how the weretiger’s early months and years in the mafia go.

It’ll all just be so much worse for Dazai because at the end of the day it never really mattered.

Analysis of the day: Day 3

Theoretically, if Atsushi is the one to go to the Port Mafia, what will happen to his spirit?

As a general rule, Atsushi is kind and yet completely bases his life around what others want of him. How long would he have to be in the port mafia before they become his family and those he searches approval from instead of Dazai and the rest of the agency?

Will he search approval from Akutagawa (more than he has already)?

He’s already rather dependent on what others think of him and blames himself for the events of canon. I can very much see it becoming too much for him, especially if someone actually dies in the current arc, and thus he may need to separate himself from the rest of the agency in order to maintain his sanity.

Additionally, I don’t see him wanting/allowing Dazai or Kyouka to rejoin the mafia, so if given the option I think he’d volunteer for the “greater good”.

Once in the mafia though,

Will he give up on his moral sense in order to make up for the fact that Akutagawa won’t kill until their 6 months are up? Will he kill for the two of them because he will believe it’s the only way for them to survive?

Will he try his best to protect Akutagawa in every way that the other once protected him? Will they still fight, trying their best to (affectionately) kill eachother, or will they finally settle for a truce and work as proper partners?

Will Akutagawa still allow Atsushi use of Rashamon? Will they protect each other because it’s all they can do without Dazai there to protect either of them anymore?

Will they both move on from Dazai’s mentorship and finally begin to depend more on themselves and each other than external validation?

There’s always the tiger to worry about as well, given that she most likely would not be in control as soon as Atsushi left the agency. Would Akutagawa help him through that - teaching him the forceful control of his ability that he only managed to learn through Dazai?

This of course, is dependent on the fact that Akutagawa would be paired with him and Atsushi wouldn’t become Mori’s test subject, but given their relationship that’s a prediction gamble that I’m willing to take.

Character analysis of the day: Day 2

Im currently very much considering the possible similarities between BEAST and canon if Atsushi is the one chosen to go to the PM as per the terms of the deal.

Is there a certain point where canon atsushi will be able to fall into the lack of emotion mixed with dependency that was characteristic of the BEAST version of himself? Or perhaps will he be more changed by his time in the agency than anything else, resulting in a completely different ending to his story?

Of course, he won’t have Dazai with him in the mafia to look up to and idolize like BEAST, but it’s not completely improbable to think that those same shoes could be filled by someone else, like Akutagawa, albeit in a different way. If someone such as Akutagawa were to fill the role, it’s more likely to think that Atsushi’s idolization will be more of a way to survive than anything else, but that remains to be seen.

Chuuya is also a strong contenedor for this type of role, as it would fit very well for Atsushi’s character arc and in my opinion complete the ying-yang of his dynamic with Akutagawa given their mentorship pipeline. In this situation, I think it’s far more likely to be about survival and keeping Atsushi away from Mori than anything else.

Mori, of course, is the worst of the possible options. If Atsushi ended up under Mori’s control, I think the parallels between Atsushi and young Dazai would become very strong, given the way Mori is likely to treat him.

Even if Atsushi doesn’t end up with a new mentor/idol in the mafia, there’s still undoubtedly going to be a significant change to his character as he attempts to hold onto his moral compass in a place which has time and time again worked to undermine that for its members.
