Maine Lobster Crawl, Day 1: Monhegan Island
As we began our lobster roll journey, our first stop was Monhegan Istalnd, a 1 hr ferry ride from Port Clyde Harbor (near St Georges).
We arrived around 4pm and checked into our lovely B&B called the Cracked Mug.
View from the back porch of the Cracked Mug
Next, we discovered the only seafood joint on the island, the Fish House, a short walking distance from the Cracked Mug, so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.
The Fish House, Monhegan Island
We ordered Lobster rolls and fish (Haddock) tacos. The lobster roll (first pic at the top of the blog post) was a huge disappointment, lightly dressed with mayonnaise. The bigger issues were twofold: a lack of meat (quantity) and pieces of leg included as filler (quality). You'd think a $20 roll would deliver something full or even overflowing, but this is what happens when patrons are held captive to only one public option on an island (a monopoly): the product tends to really suffer. The fish tacos and Lobster BLT were better bets.

Lobster Crawl Day 3: Nautilus, Belfast Maine:
Nautilus is just a mile down the road from Youngs Lobster Pound, both are on the Penobscot Bay and have wonderful waterfront views. But since Nautilus is adjacent to a dock, you will typically see a number of large yachts and sailboats. On this day, a large 145' super yacht "Rena" from Montego Bay, Jamaica) was berthed here, as well as a stunnig blue 45' sailboat named "Bella" from Newport RI.
The lobster roll is one of the more expensive in the state of Maine, clocking in at $24. This compares to $21 at Young's Lobster Pound Just down the road.
This lobster roll was good, but not what I would expect for a Lobster or seafood restaurant dedicated to the best of casual seafood cuisine in a lobster region. While the roll was properly toasted and buttered, the lobster minimally dressed with mayo, the amount of lobster was about 30-40% less than at Youngs, and was 15% more expensive. A good roll, but overpriced and understuffed.
We stopped by on TaconTueaday. I suggest trying the spicy shrimp tacos instead.
