Jenny I'm gonna need your worthier meta writing skills to help me get something outta my head. So I was thinking about the Confessional scene (lbr I've been thinking about that all day) and how the only other time a similar scene has been used was just before Sam undertook the final Hell Trial. I can't help but feel it's important (though I don't quite know how yet!) I keep thinking about it in terms of Dean purifying himself? (1/3)
I mean, Sam confessed (as far as we're aware) to an empty confessional box. Whereas Dean confessed to a priest. Sam needed to be absolved of his sins by Dean whereas Dean needs someone more than just Sam to absolve him of his?? I'm really not sure what I'm getting at with this. (2/3) Maybe... maybe I just see similarities that the first step to cure a demon (which, given next week's promo, Dean still seems to harbour something of his demon self) is to first confess your sins to purify your blood. I just... my thoughts aren't that coherent and I feel like I'm close to the edge of something, I just can't quite figure out what. (3/3)
First of all: I can assure you that my crazy rambles aren’t worthier than yours or anybody else’s.
Second of all: a round of hugs, because of the confessional scene
Third of all: I have been thinking about something like what you say as well. I think I remember larinah being the one, who brought up the possibility of Dean undertaking the hell trials to be purified and cleansed on a cosmic level and when Dean went into that confessional I absolutely felt reminded of 8x23 as well.
I think the crux of the whle confessional might be that it actually is not important whether or not someone is sitting on the other side of that door, because the confessional truly - at least to me - isn’t about being forgiven by somebody else, it’s about thinking deeply about yourself and your choices, so to me the dialogue Dean had with the priest can more be seen as Dean opening up to himself and allowing and addressing himself and being able to face up to his mistakes or his struggles.
A confessional is meant to lift a weight off your shoulders, absolve you of your sins, it’s seeking forgiveness. The thing is, Dean doesn’t need forgiveness by anybody else and not from god. The only person he needs to forgive him is himself and I feel like Dean might have made a first step in the right direction in that regard, though of course his mindset suggests that he is headed nowehere good.
So while I think it was important for Dean to just vent and unload to someone he doesn’t know and being forgiven, it’s just a sort of copy of what is what Dean truly needs and caves: deliverance.
All that being said, I think you might be very well onto something here. Like I said this morning, to me it seems to have been another step on Dean’s 12-step-program (of saying goodbye) And it is def interesting that next week shows supposedly Dean demonic self re-awakes. Though I am also thinking it is entirely possible that Rowena is messing with Dean’s perception of self in that regard. He is the perfect victim for her unfortunately in that regard and so is Sam.
I think we should keep our eyes open over the next set of episodes if there are more hints. I unfortunatley don’t have the feeling I could help you a lot. ;__; But maybe some of my rambles made something in your head click int place anyway. I’m curious what it’ll be. Please tell me when you figure it out. :)
