From the 1930’s until 2009, on January 19, in the early hours of the day of Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday, an anonymous someone in black with a cane would show up at his grave with a bottle of cognac, pour a glass, raise a toast, leave some flowers and the bottle, and then bail. Every year. No one knows if this was a single person or a series of people (though considering how long it went on, the latter seems likely), no one knows why this tradition started or ended… it’s just a mystery.

In 2011 there was someone who tried to copy the Toaster, but some dude who had been watching the Toaster for years was able to tell that it wasn’t the same person. Said dude was actually really bummed that the original didn’t leave a note or anything explaining why he’d retired.

In 2015 the Maryland Historical Society held a contest for who would be the new Poe Toaster, and selected an individual to take up the tradition the following year. It’s been continued, and the new Toaster remains anonymous.
