ICU for VIP: Health minister refers Hospital Workers Unionist to prosecutor

Greece’s health minister Thanos Plevris said early Thursday morning that he will refer the president of hospital workers union (POEDIN) to the prosecutor for the claims that public hospitals reserve beds in Intensive Care Units exclusively for Covid-patients who are Very Important Persons. Short time later, state broadcaster ERT reported that the prosecutor has called Michalis Giannakos for explanations and evidence to support his claim ICU for VIP.

According to ERT, the prosecutor’s call to POEDIN president is part of an open investigation since there are complaints about the death of intubated patients outside the ICUs.

Speaking to media, Minister Plevris vehemently denied POEDIN claims on 47 reserved ICU beds for VIP saying that there are specific medical criteria as to why an intubated patient is or not being transferred to another hospital with available capacities.

Mέλη της ΠΟΕΔΗΝ πραγματοποιούν διαμαρτυρία και προσπαθούν να φτάσουν στο Υπουργείο Υγείας όπου υπάρχουν αστυνομικές δυνάμεις. Επεισόδια σημειώθηκαν στο Υπουργείο Υγείας μεταξύ μελών της ΠΟΕΔΗΝ αλλά και των ΜΑΤ, καθώς οι συμβασιούχοι προσπάθησαν να μπουν μέσα στο υπουργείο, για να συναντηθούν με τον Βασίλη Κικίλια. Η ανακοίνωση της ΠΟΕΔΗΝ: «Στηρίζουμε και καλύπτουμε την Στάση Εργασίας 7πμ – 10πμ και την Συγκέντρωση 9πμ στο Υπουργείο Υγείας των εκτάκτων υπαλλήλων. 300 – 400 συνάδελφοί μας Επικουρικό προσωπικό παρότι εργάζονται πολλά χρόνια στα Νοσοκομεία, βρίσκονται στην πόρτα της εξόδου (απολύονται) εάν δεν υπάρξει πολιτική πρωτοβουλία από την Κυβέρνηση και μάλιστα απολύονται εν’ μέσω πανδημίας. Συμμετείχαν στο διαγωνισμό 2Κ και παρότι δικαιούνταν αυξημένη μοριοδότηση είναι στους αποτυχόντες. Επικουρικό προσωπικό περί τις 2000 λήγουν οι συμβάσεις από 1 Οκτώβρη έως τέλος του έτους και απολύονται. Παρά τις δεσμεύεις δεν υπήρξε νομοθετική πρωτοβουλία έστω παράτασης τα συμβάσεων. Οι συμβασιούχοι που συμμετείχαν στους διαγωνισμούς των Νοσοκομείων για τις νέες Συμβάσεις Εργασίας ορισμένου χρόνου στις υπηρεσίες καθαριότητας, φύλαξης, εστίασης και δεν είναι στους επιτυχόντες απολύονται. Δεν δικαιούνται την παράταση που προβλέπει ο νόμος. Είναι εξειδικευμένο και έμπειρο προσωπικό εκ των οποίων πολλοί εργάζονται σε Μονάδες Εντατικής Θεραπείας και «φεύγουν από το σύστημα σε περίοδο που «τους έχει ανάγκη περισσότερο από ποτέ». Διεκδικούμε αφενός την παράταση των συμβάσεων και αφετέρου την μονιμοποίησή τους. Οι έκτακτες ανάγκες είναι πάγιες και διαχρονικές στην Δημόσια Υγεία και την Πρόνοια. Τα Νοσοκομεία θα καταρρεύσουν με 45000 κενές οργανικές θέσεις εάν φύγουν και οι 12000 έκτακτοι υπάλληλοι».

Police batons against hospital workers amid the pandemic (video)

With tear gas and batons riot police went against hospital workers in downtown Athens on Wednesday morning. Protesters marched to the Health Ministry demanding a meeting with the Minister. However, police did not allow them to come closer.

The union of public hospital workers POEDIN demands extension of work contracts for some 2,000 temporary personnel whose contracts expire between October and December.

But the times where pandemic front line workers were receiving gratitude clapping are over. Now it’s apparently time for tear gas and batons by order of the political leadership of the country.

As police goes against them, protesters shout “Shame! Disgrace!” and some also sends law enforcement officers “to hell.”

Among those who felt the hardness of a police shield was also the union president Michalis Giannakos.

Islands lack ambulances and trained staff to drive them

Several Greek islands, including popular tourist destinations, do not have enough ambulances or staff to drive them, prompting local authorities to seek makeshift solutions, according to the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers (POEDIN). Santorini has only seven ambulance service (EKAB) workers and Myconos only eight, while on Paros a team of nine has been working without breaks to ensure that at least one ambulance is available at any given time and on Ios there are just two EKAB staff, the federation said. The islands of Samos, Chios and Lesvos, which have reception centers hosting thousands of migrants, have more staff but EKAB workers say they are stretched.
