1050, a quiet auditorium

It’s a sacred moment every Christian (and many a pagan) knows. Metal plates pass by, bread is eaten, juice is sipped. Every mind is on the Cross and its glorious burden. But not this week. If you had looked towards the left of the congregation this holy Sunday you would have observed a curious pantomime. A man and two women, young adults all, solemnly gathered the last of their money for the collection plate. They had but three dollars apiece to offer up for God’s holy work, and they planned to give it willingly, cheerfully even. However, the youngest took the cheer a mite too far. Gazing solemnly at the paltry sum in her hand, she caught the eyes of her family and mimicked throwing the money into the air as if on a game show. The young man, her husband, gave her the stink eye, but her sister had to hold back giggles. Encouraged by this, she pretended to make it rain on the pew, eliciting smothered cackles during the prayer from her sister, darkly amused disapproval from her husband, and general glares from others in the vicinity. So we see that even in the humblest circumstances and holy moments, inappropriate humor is ALWAYS a possibility.
