bare feet pad along the hallway, kiara had long since forgone checking the time. it was pointless. she'd go to bed, struggle to fall asleep. and then, as soon as she'd drift off . . . images of the car, flashes of a kitty hawk uniform would infiltrate her mind like an intruder. she'd wake with sweaty palms, heart racing, gasping for air. it was silly, part of her knew that. all the pogues had trauma. all the pogues had ongoing issues with their families. yet, she couldn't quite let this go. it haunted her. her parents, still haunted her. not that she'd spoken to them much since she had gotten back from el dorado. part of her wished it was her decision . . . she knew that it wasn't. feet are light on the stairs, not wanting to wake anyone up. if she was going to suffer? her pride meant suffering alone.
the kitchen is where she finds herself. as she grabs a beer, the condensation cold against her fingers. she'd read that temperature could help with anxiety. the contrast between warm and cold shocking the nervous system. and it helps, even against the clammy skin of her hand. she walks over to the dining table, placing a coaster onto it before placing the beer down. pope would have a fit if the table was ruined so quickly. not that she minded much, it was nice to have order in the chaos that seemed to slot into her life so naturally now. she makes herself busy, by rolling a joint. it's not a great idea to get cross faded on her own in the early hours of the morning . . . but she'd take anything if it meant not being in her own head for just a little while. it's only when she hears movement behind her that she stops. wielding the beer bottle as a weapon. heart on her chest as she realises who it is. “don't fucking scare me like that man,” words are light, despite her intial reaction. “or i'll have to tell sarah who really used the last of her coconut lotion.”
