"i have a very important question for you and i need to be one hundred percent honest, okay?" peter started, and it seemed this might be a serious question - with his tone and the way he was holding himself. he paused for several long moments, before he continued on, looking to gwen. "... am i bad liar?" his eyebrows knit together, lips quirking downward. while the question but not be as serious as he originally acted like, he was being quite genuine in wanting to know this.

   “you’d listen, but would you understand?”

   it’s always hard to talk about, especially when no one around you truly realizes how bad things have been. not just to them, but others similar. they wouldn’t care, why would anyone care? NOBODY DID BEFORE, so why would anyone care now?

   their eye glances at her from the side, they don’t mean to sound so HARSH; but when it came to their emotions, who they were- they tend to get defensive. they have to be, they have to justify their own existence, one ally didn’t wish to be. but the world is cruel & unwelcoming, it doesn’t listen to what people want.

   it’s like the world itself was deaf.

   “i- i don’t want sympathy, i just- i want someone to    actually understand, & not just PRETEND that they    do just to make me feel better.”

   “i’m just going to ignore that comment,” MUTTERED UNDER THEIR BREATH, leaning down to dig something out of their bag which was resting against their seat. they didn’t think they could get this far on their little ‘investigation’, but when it came to rachel? they needed anything, even if it meant getting their sources from people who they weren’t exactly on good terms with. victoria was always someone who dehumanized them, & always had it out for their best friend, petty art school shenanigans.

   BUT THIS WASN’T PETTY.

   it had been six months by this point. they had their highs & lows... mostly lows. but the idea of just talking to people, rather than being nosy or using tricks, had the chance of working. their hand holds a cassette recorder, somewhat old fashioned but in good condition despite that. they don’t hit the record button just yet, but do present the device to the blackwell student, gaze unnaturally focused.

   “& just let yourself talk about what you know.”    ALLY PAUSES, finger hovering over the button.    “or... o- or remember. this just makes it easier    than writing it down. ready?”

    “i’ve had worse.” it’s said with a weak laugh, prosthetic fingers reaching out towards the others view. this, whatever it was, was nothing compared to losing a whole limb. but... that’s a story for another time. it’s a bit blurry of how they ended up like this, something about a heist gone wrong. that kid- their hunch on him was right, but at what cost?

   where did they even go?

   what are they going to do now?

   the glass shards that had sliced through flesh stung, but wincing & hissing about it wasn’t going to do anything. without thinking, they pull out a shard that had dug into their side, feeling their body burn exposed flesh to keep the bleeding at a minimum. cassidy without a doubt is going to have questions about it, if she didn’t have any about their general appearance already.

   “t- the others, are they...?” still here? still alive? did she even know?    the answer, whatever it is, fills them with dread. but it has to be asked.    they have to protect them.
