Poison Pie (Hebeloma crustuliniforme) from a few years ago when I didn’t know what it was! I was just looking through old photos and I have so many pictures of these! This is a reminder to take lots of mushroom photos and make observations even if you can’t identify a species immediately! Many mushrooms fruit seasonally (not year-round), so over time you’ll become familiar with the patterns of fruitings and it will make you a better mushroom-hunter

Poison Pie (Hebeloma crustuliniforme). The most striking morphological features pictured are the way the gills are attached to the stem in notches (aka notched attachment), the brown spores (visible on the mushroom caps in the foreground), and the pine needles (this mushroom is mycorrhizal with pine). It’s not good practice to make species identification from photos alone because mushroom identification requires more than just physical features, but hopefully noticing important traits in photos can lead to more accurate information-gathering when it comes to narrowing down a species.
