As very sensite creatures due to their thin, porous skin through which they breathe - the presence of fogs are a great indicator of a healthy ecosystem. They also eat many pests (like mosquitos), provide a food source for birds, fish and mammals and the tadpoles filter our drinking water. So, apart from their beautiful spring serenading, they are amazing creatures to have around! Unfortunately the hazards presented by water pollution, climate change, habitat loss and the effects of invasive species does mean they are under threat.
I learnt today that a new species of frog: the Strawberry Frog was discovered in Stellenbosch in 2016! (It looks just like a strawberry!!! - a clever ploy to attract its prey to it amoungst the strawberry fields there). Interestingly, it closely resembles a group of frogs of the Poison Dart Frog family which are native to South America... and are highly poisonous. (So check carefully next time you indulge in strawberries 😊).
