Variants and Crossbreeds of the Johto starters!

While I was having my fun with recoloring Pokémon shinies, I thought about the crossbreeds and regional variants that I have seen other artists make for years now, and decided to dip my toes in that.

The choice of doing the Johto starters was a bit of a coincidence. I started off with Chikorita because I think she's hated for no reason. Look at that tiny bean sprout, why would you insult her?! Next, I did Cyndaquil because in the last shiny recolor I did hisuian thyplosion. After that, Totodile was the obvious choice.

These were so much fun to design! I am for sure making more, I already have a list of other Pokémons I want to do. Of course, all the Eeeveelutions are on there already.

What other Pokémon would y'all like to see? Should I do a version for Meganium, Typhlosion, and Feraligatr as well?

A long while back I designed some oddish variations, but I wanted to try redrawing them with more design experience under my belt! I think these lil babies look a lot better after all these years, what do you think? ' v ' (also monstera variety my baby i would kill for you)

I think you mentioned a while ago that there were Gogoat "lineages" bred to have different types of plants in their manes. I don't have any personal experience with Skiddo or Gogoats, but I'm curious about how breeders select for that. Is it a grafting situation? Or are the plants in a Gogoat's mane symbiotic? In any case, thanks for taking the time to take a look at such a silly question, and for running such an amazing blog!

not a silly question at all! it actually has to do with very careful dietary and environmental management.

sometimes a pokemon's diet and habitat can affect its appearance. this usually has to do with coloration, but there are more extreme examples such as oricorio where it even influences their typing. grass types can be bred for a variety of differences in things like flower growth or flavor! in some cases, this can be done via grafting, which is a delicate surgical procedure and doesn't always result in the pokemon's genes modifying to "take" the new plant; in pokemon like the florges line you can select for pokemon that prefer certain flower types. but most of the time it's about providing the exact parameters you want!

for gogoat, mixing their browse with the plant you want their mane to grow and changing soil types/humidity level/sun exposure is how you start the process. then, by breeding over several generations, you select towards offspring whose plant growth has started shifting towards the new plant. on average it takes about 15 generations for the new plant to be "set" genetically. it's not an easy process by any means, but there are some really neat heritage breeds of gogoat out there!
