Charged particles from the Sun, the solar wind, are constantly bombarding the Earth. You can think of the solar wind as a kind of electric current. Our planet’s magnetic field channels that current towards the North and South Poles. When it hits our atmosphere, the oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the air glow like giant fluorescent lightbulbs.”
