Pole Dancing Students’ Lingo
Pole Move - Pole dancing move. Ex: "What is that polemove called?"
Power Move - Usually advanced polemove that requires strength, balance and flexibility. Ex: "The Rainbow Marchenko is a power move!"
Spot - generally requires a trusted mate to make sure you don't fall and die while helping you to adjust your way into the polemove that you desire. Ex:"Can you please spot me?"
Point! - Short for “Point Your Toes!” frequently used by instructors yelling at students to point their toes.
Cockroach/Spider Legs - Mainly people who don’t straighten their legs (with toes pointed) while inverting or doing some pole moves that requires perfect lines.. thus mimicking the look of a dead cockroach/spider’s legs.
Heels - Pole dancing shoes. A pole dancer’s equivalent of sports shoes.
No grip - No grip on the pole.. meaning we may slip, fall and hurt ourselves. Ex:“I HAVE NO GRIP! HELP!” or “I can’t do this, no grip.”
Sticky - Plenty of grip. Ex:“I’m so sticky today! Definitely can nail that Jade Split now!”
Grip Aid - Usually in the form of a solution or glove to give the pole student sufficient grip to stick to the pole.
Shaving gel/cream - A shaving gel/cream usually used by students who use brass pole to stick to the pole. To the layperson, this is usually used to shave off unwanted facial and.. er any other types of hair, but for pole students, most use it as grip aid.
Dry Hands - A brand of a bottle of liquid chalk that pole dancing students’ use to keep our hands dry.
Combo - Short for pole tricks combination, usually consisting of a series of pole tricks. Frequently used when the teacher is calling out for dance choreography classes. Ex:”1st Combo! Spin climb, aerial invert, hook into Gemini, foldover to Scorpio!”
Dismount - To come down from the pole to the ground. Ex: “After this combo, dismount, body wave...”
Pole Mates - Pole dancing classmates Ex:”Me and my pole mates will be off for dinner after this, we’re starving!”
Disclaimer: I’m guessing every country there’s different pole dancing students’ lingo, but this is as much as I can remember for now. Just writing this for fun cause I realise a lot of things my pole mates and I talk about, my fiance or anyone who isn’t into pole, they have like ???? all over their faces. Haha.
