Silence fell upon the two of you. You kinda thought he would at least hummed, or something, but when you looked up to see what was going on, you had to chuckle lightly. Bucky fell asleep, your body on top of his.

He must have been so tired, so scared to not have his Omega with him, and when he finally found you, you couldn’t remember him. It took a toll on him, and you knew it would take a lot of time and probably therapy to make Bucky loosen his protective behaviour a little. But it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered as long as the two of you were together. With this thought on your mind you let yourself be lulled to a sweet sleep by Bucky’s raising chest and puffs of breath.

“Oh, for the love of God, Bucky, I’m going, and that’s my last word!” You said, while angrily stared into his eyes. Bucky standing in front of you, his chest puffing with his jaw set and lips pulled in a thin line.

“For the last time. No! You’re not going anywhere, ‘Mega! This will be too dangerous, and I’m not letting you go undercover when the perp can easily attack you. No fucking way.”

His breathing was fast and shallow, and you could see that under the tough exterior, there was a little scared soul, begging you not to go into action. But you had to. It was your job, and despite all that happened, you still loved every second of it.

“You guys will be there, remember? I’m not going there alone, Buck. You’ll be sitting on the bar, and when you see that the guy’s doing some fishy stuff, you can arrest him. Scott will be in the next booth, listening to all the conversation, and the rest of the team will be either at the exits or in the van outside the club. We got it all covered, baby, nothing’s gonna happen to me, I promise.”

You stroke his cheek, and he let himself relax a bit under your touch. He knew he was being unreasonable, that they all will be there to protect you, but still. He couldn’t afford to lose you, and he couldn’t bring himself to put you knowingly in danger.

“I know baby, I know. I just… I don’t know. It’s the first time since Amber that you’ll be put in risk, you know? I mean, sure, you were chasing some assholes since, but nothing was as serious as this one. I just wish someone else could take your place, you know? Not only am I gonna be super uncomfortable because you’ll be in danger, but also another Alpha will be probably touching you, and I’m not too sure if I can take that.”

His eyes darkened for a split second, imagining all the things he wanted to do to you that night. He then breathed out a simple deal and smiled at you. “I trust you, I want you to know that. I know you are strong enough to take anything. I just want you to know you don’t have to. That I’m here to protect you or at least help you beat the shit out of all the bastards out there.”

It was something you talked a lot about, especially in your shared therapy. After Amber and the toll it took on both of you, you decided to take both separate and shared therapy sessions, not only to help you realise the defence mechanisms in yourselves but also to figure out what was the best approach towards your relationship.

Bucky wanted to protect you, and it came to the point you two started fighting about you coming back to work. Bucky wanted to see you at home, tucked under a blanket, waiting for him till he comes back from his dangerous job. But you were having none of that. You wanted back in action. You were a cop, no matter what. You were not the first and not the last detective to be hurt, even though you were hurt more because of your personal life than your line of work.

It was an uneasy task to get Bucky to therapy. He thought everything was alright with him, and just because he found you every issue he ever had was suddenly resolved. But you knew very well that that wasn’t the case, and pretty much kicked him into signing for a solo therapy.

His over-protectiveness and sense of failure were the next issues you two worked on, and you were on a really good way. But you still had a long way ahead of you.

You knew it would be tricky to make Bucky agree to let you go undercover, but even your therapist thought it was a good idea. You would both realise that you were able to protect yourself, but at the same time, Bucky would be there if anything would go too far. You could count on him, and you needed to show him he could count on you to not get killed.

During the process, the whole team was a huge support group. They wanted you both at your best game but wanted you healthy and happy more. So they all let you take it one step at a time for both of you to do things at your own pace. Steve would assign you the seemingly easier cases, and Scott would never say a thing about it. If anything he was glad he could spend a little more time with Hope during that time. He was well aware that the time would come when you two would be on top of your game, and you’d be staying at the station most of the days.

Another thing that brought Bucky’s protective side, even more, was the fact that his Alpha side wanted to breed you bad. Like really bad. He couldn’t stop thinking about you all swollen with his baby. And the thought that someone would snatch this dream of his from him scared the life out of him.

You still weren’t too sure if you wanted a baby so soon. It really wasn’t even a year ever since you met Bucky, and he was all about family and marriage and all that. Not that you were opposed, not at all. But you wanted to wait for a little longer, enjoy your time as a detective, because you were aware that the second you’d get pregnant, Bucky would do all things possible to keep you at home. He would even probably make you lay down all the time, just to make sure you wouldn’t fall down the stairs, or something.

His breeding need got the better of him one day, and he felt like neither yours or his apartment were sufficient for a family, so he bought you a house. It was a grand gesture that he meant everything he said about taking care of you, and you appreciated greatly, knowing you could count on him no matter what. Even if you didn’t want a baby right away, you knew that if it really happened, Bucky would be there every step of the way, and he would make the best dad one day.

“Earth to Y/N!” Bucky waved his hand in front of your face. You shook your head, realising you were daydreaming about your future life with Bucky again. Maybe you were more ready to have a family with him than you thought.

“Sorry, I lost myself in my head there for a second.” You smiled reassuringly when Bucky looked at you a little confused and little afraid of what you might have been thinking about.

“C’mon, lovers! It’s almost time!” Scott yelled, peeking around a corner. You nodded his way and looked at back at Bucky.

“We got this babe. We’ll get this motherfucker and then we can go home. We might even be lucky to come soon enough to build the dresser we bought in Ikea last week! I mean, it doesn’t get better than building the björksnäs, or whatever it’s called!”

You beamed at him, and Bucky just shook his head. “Doll, I can think of a hundred other activities I’d rather do than build freaking furniture from Ikea. I mean, it took me only two fucking hours to built that coffee table, and it had 4 steps.”

You chuckled at the memory of Bucky swearing like a sailor, and after his 3rd unsuccessful try, you had to stop him from wrecking half the living room. He wanted to do it all alone, be the man in the house, but he had to admit that he wasn’t good with plans, and definitely not plans from Ikea.

“We’ll just have to train your patience, love. What are you going to do when our children will need help with homework, and they won’t understand the way you explain it to them, huh?”

“Are you seriously comparing our future kids to furniture? And wait a minute, since when do you imagine things such as me doing homework with our kids?”

You could see that it pleased him immensely that he was no longer the only one in the relationship thinking about your shared future. “well, you were the one implanting the image in my head. You gotta live with that now!”

He couldn’t finish the sentence as Scott’s voice boomed across the hall once again. “Don’t make me come there and get you two! Seriously, come on, we’ve got work to do!”

And you knew that Bucky would be there, every step of the way, no matter how many Ikea furniture you’d put in his way. You were just better like this, better together.

Scott was a bad planner, and that was an understatement of the year. When he said “we have to use it against him” he didn’t really think of a plan to do it. He and Hope would spend a lot of time at your apartment because, after the little incident, you had to take the rest of the week off to get rid of the last bits of concussion and to let your arm heal. 

So you had a lot of time to think and make a plan on your own because your partner was obviously useless. You told everything to Wanda, who actually took the week off too just to spend more quality time together. You loved her, and all, but 4 days 24 hours a day, that was a lot of Wanda even for you.

It was during a particularly loud night at your apartment, with the two couples keeping you company, that you actually figured out what to do. And it all started so innocently.

You talked about friends and family, just laughing and remembering people, when you realized you and Hope had a mutual friend, without the other one knowing it. “Wait a second, you wanna tell me you know Strange? Doctor Stephen Strange?” Hope almost yelled and laughed at the same time. “Yeah, I’ve known him for years! He repaired my shoulder after a not so good fall during the Academy. We’ve been friends ever since.” You replied and smiled at the memory.

You were little over 23, working your ass and mind off at the Academy when during a drill, you dislocated your shoulder. “Oh shut up, I know he is mated and gay, but does everyone else know?” You stopped laughing and looked at Wanda. What was she talking about? “Go on, I’m intrigued,” said Scott and bid Wanda proceed with her master plan. 

“I mean, you wouldn’t even have to lie to people, Strange wanted to see your new unit anyway, didn’t he? And he’s like a big brother to you, so he always hugs you and kisses you on the head and stuff. You could tell him to come to pick you up at work and have dinner at Wong’s place, no-one in the office would have to know you guys are going out just like friends.” 

You wanted to dismiss her idea. You hated lying, and this seemed like you would have to lie to a lot of people. But Wanda had a point. You would just let them live a story they’d construct in their own heads, it would, theoretically, had nothing to do with you. And seeing Bucky growling at Scott and attacking Sam, for whatever reason that was, could really set the wheels into motion.

“I would have to tell Stephen, I really can’t lie to him, but, and I hate to admit it, this could actually work Wanda. I don’t know what I expect to happen, but something will probably happen, for better or for worse. Alright, I’m game, but if he tries to tackle somebody again, I’m gonna mop the floor with him, true mate or not, concussion or not.” 

You smiled to yourself. You had a plan. 

Bucky, unlike you, didn’t have many things to smile about on that particular Friday night. After acting like a complete douchebag, Steve called him and Sam to his office and gave them hell. No-no-no. Hell would’ve been better than yelling and cursing Steve did. And Steve never cursed. Never. 

So on a Friday night, when he usually would’ve been at home, or at a bar with Sam, occasionally with Steve too, he was now at a crossroad in the middle of Manhattan. After his and Sam’s shift end, for the rest of the week, they both had to go back to being traffic officers. They were both so happy when they took this uniform off of them for the last time and became detectives. Steve knew how much they both hated it, and that’s why this was their punishment for acting like a bunch of children. 

He hasn’t seen you either, because you had to stay at home and get better. This thought made a shiver run down his spine. You were injured and even worse, he himself hurt you. Not intentionally, but that did nothing to his conscience. 

With your absence, he realised a horrific thing. He missed you. The thought made him shiver again. But it was the truth, he got so used to you being there in the office, hearing your voice, however in the distance, it was and being able to smell your delicious smell, he missed all those things, and he couldn’t wait for you to come to work on Monday. And he hated himself for even thinking about it.

Sam’s been pissed at him ever since the scene in the unit, they both knew what they were talking about and the only oblivious person in that conversation was you, and it was, unfortunately, you who got hurt in the end. Sam’s been giving him the silent treatment, and Bucky couldn’t get out of him more than “uh-huh” or “nu-uh” or an occasional shrug. Bucky knew he deserved it for being such an asshole, but it still bugged him.

When he was first paired up with Sam, he pleaded with their previous Captain to get him a new partner. Anyone, really, but that talkative smug Alpha. He didn’t succeed, and after months of Sam’s constant bugging and jokes and just stupidities of everyday life with him, Bucky realised he grew fond of him and wouldn’t change a thing. 

And now he really needed his friend, that smug ass to yell at him, punch him in the arm, and tell him that they’ll figure it out. That Sam will help him manage himself, that he would actually tell Bucky what to do. But Sam was as cold as ice. 

“Oh, come on, man. It’s been going on for days and look, I get it, I’m a dick, but like, can’t you at least talk to me?” Bucky asked Sam after their long-ass shift ended. Sam looked at him with a raised eyebrow, leaned on his car and crossed his arms. 

“Alright, you’re listening, that’s good. Ok, huh. Look, man, I’m sorry, I acted like a child and got you in the middle of a problem that’s nowhere near about you. I’m sorry I punched you for some Omega-“ 

“Some Omega? You shitting me, right? You still playing this game with your brain? Like, get your head out of your ass man. She ain’t just ‘some Omega’, you dickhead. She is YOUR fucking Omega, and you should get this concept through that thick skull of yours. And before you even start with that shit about Y/N being anything like Amber, save your breath. You and I both know that’s not the case. I didn’t like Amber from the very first look, you know that, bro. But Y/N? Everyone loves her and… you know what do what you want, man. But if you wanna reject her? Then do it properly and don’t let her hope for something you are not willing to give her.” With that, Sam got into his car and sped away. 

Bucky was left there standing, staring at the rear of Sam’s car, thinking about it all. Maybe he should reject her. Perhaps it would be for the best. 

Monday couldn’t come early enough for you. You were giddy like a little child on a Christmas Eve. You knew you had to wait till the shift was almost over, and only hope Bucky would be present.

You had Stephen and Wong over at yours on Saturday and told them about your/Wanda’s master plan. Wong was so amused and loved the idea so much, you had a lot of work to do to make him not come and watch the whole encounter. Stephen was reserved at first, he couldn’t really get into a fight, his hands were worth millions of dollars. You rolled your eyes at him and had to promise him, that you’d protect his precious little hands. 

To that he agreed and was getting more and more into the role, trying to figure out, what kinda Alpha he should play in front of the squad and if he should kiss you and how. You made a disgusted face at that and told him to just as he always does, you were good with just a side hug and a kiss on top of your head. REALLY.

Stephen had a morning shift, and you really hoped no-one would get hurt bad enough for him to have to be at the hospital. You were acting selfishly, but you really need this day to go as you planned. You both agreed that you’d text each other if anything changed, but you prayed it wasn’t necessary.

The whole day was going on smoothly, even though you could feel Bucky’s weirdly long stares at you. He wouldn’t be caught dead staring at you the week before and now? He wouldn’t even look away when you found him staring. Weird. And his questions? Was he teasing you? Testing your knowledge? You didn’t know, but you never had so much contact with him. Not that you complained. 

Oh nooo, you were too happy when he came closer to you, and you took a whiff of his scent every time he did so. Delicious, you thought, but would be more delicious in my bed. You rolled your eyes at yourself and made yourself be patient, ‘cause patience is a virtue!

Bucky thought he made his mind during the weekend: reject you. Easy as that. You two didn’t have any relationship, so he shouldn’t care for your emotions. But when Monday came, he caught himself staring at you all day. He couldn’t even concentrate on work, your smell was engulfing his whole being, and he just wanted to get up, scent you properly and take you there in front of everyone. He needed a cold shower, great. 

He couldn’t understand how one person can have such an impact on somebody by just being. He wanted to get closer to you. His whole body sang for yours. So he caught himself many times during the day coming to you and asking you stupid questions just to be closer to you. 

Sam saw it all and smirked to himself. He really hoped he wouldn’t push Bucky towards the wrong decision, but even for someone as patient as Sam, Bucky’s bullshit was too much to bear. But now, it all seemed as if everything was going the right way. At the end of the day, Bucky could even ask you on a date, or something of that sorts. 

The end of your shift was nearing, and you were growing more and more giddy. You tried to look as calm and collected as you could, but whenever you looked at Scott, he gave you his widest smile and almost always put out thumbs up to show his support. You couldn’t look at him anymore without laughing like a little girl. Jeez. 

Suddenly, the front door opened, and when you looked the way, you saw Stephen strolling through the unit towards your desk. From the corner of your eye, you could see Bucky and Sam ceasing their movements, probably stopping in the middle of cleaning their desks. 

“Hey, hun, ready for the dinner? Wong got us his best table.” Stephen smirked at you and did what he always did when greeting you: side hug and a kiss on top of your head. You smiled inwardly and let him do his thing.

“Yeah, sure. Just need to pack last few things, and we can head there. You know Scott, right?” you looked into the direction of your partner who obviously needed every last strand of self-control not to burst out laughing. 

“Yeah, yeah, we’ve met a couple of times. Wong’s, huh? You’re surely spoiling her, man.” 

Now it was you almost laughing your ass off. When you glanced towards Sam and Bucky’s tables, you could see Bucky’s posture changed from the relaxed, I’m-going-home type of posture into a very rigid one, with a set jaw. His eyes felt like they could pierce your soul. And he was just standing there, staring at you. You thought you could even hear a low rumble coming from his chest, but you couldn’t be too sure. 

“Oh my God,” Natasha squealed from behind you, “you’re Stephen Strange, the famous surgeon, right? It’s so nice to meet you!” They shook hands, and she looked at you questionably. The team felt the tension between you and Bucky, and you were quite sure they knew about your little situation. So, you weren’t surprised Natasha was looking at you with some sort of suspicion. 

“Yeah, we’re just heading out. Anyway guys, have a nice evening and-“

“Y/L/N! Can I speak you with for a sec?” You expected a lot of voices to say that, but Bucky’s wasn’t one of them, so you just looked at him confused. Satisfied that he probably took the bait, but confused nevertheless. “Can’t it wait till tomorrow, Barnes?” 

“No, now!” and he left the room, expecting you to follow him. Stephen smirked at you and bid you go, not without playfully hitting your bum. You just giggled and shook your head at him and went to see what Bucky wanted. 

“What is it, Barnes? I got a dinner planned and-“ you couldn’t finish the sentence as your whole body was suddenly pushed against the wall behind you. Neither of you moved, you stared at Bucky, waiting for his next move. 

He didn’t plan on doing this. He really wanted to let you go home and work up his courage to talk to you in the next few days. But when he saw the Alpha coming in for you, expensive suit and all, taking you to one of the best restaurants in the city, he just couldn’t hold back. 

He wasn’t thinking clearly, he just needed to get you out of this Alpha’s presence and alone. Hell, he didn’t even know what to tell you once he pushed you against the wall and held you there. He was starting to calm down, your mere presence was bringing inner peace to him that he didn’t think possible. 

He was a hot-headed man. It mostly did him good, in his line of job. He was the bad cop, Sam was the good one, and the dynamics always worked. But he couldn’t be hot-headed all the time. Usually, he would have to do breathing exercises to calm himself down, but with you around (when you two were alone), he didn’t have to do anything. He could just stare into your eyes, letting your scent wrap around his body like a blanket.

“Anything you wanna say, Barnes, or can I go to that dinner now?” You smirked at him. A low rumble left his chest, but other than that, he was quiet. You would pay anything in the world to know what was on Bucky’s mind. Which, by the way, would be money totally wasted because Bucky’s mind was completely blank. He couldn’t even construct a sentence right now, let alone a sentence that would convey his emotions. 

He didn’t know what he was feeling, he just knew that he couldn’t let you go out on a date with another man. Another Alpha, who could hurt you, or take away the possibility for Bucky to make a move. 

“Don’t go, Y/N. Please,” he whispered and lowered his head, but still not letting go of your shoulders. 

“Why shouldn’t I go to dinner? You said yourself, that you’ll never want an Omega and maybe I’m just acting on your words.” 

“Can I, will you… will you let me explain, please? I know I’ve been acting distant-“ 

“You haven’t been distant Bucky, you’ve been downright hurtful, both emotionally and physically. What would you like to explain to me, huh? Why you’ve been acting like I’m a fucking plague, or why you jumped at Sam and me last week, or what?” You were glad he was talking to you, that he was somehow trying, but you needed him to understand how hurt you were and that you weren’t about to give in so easily. If that’s what he wanted, of course. 

“Everything, let me explain everything, please. I don’t- I don’t understand myself either, and I’m ashamed that my actions and my stupidity hurt you last week. Just please, hear me out, give me a chance to explain.” He was still barely whispering, but now looking you dead in the eye and you could’ve sworn your whole insides just melted. Damn those eyes! 

You sighed. “Fine, you can explain it all to me, but not today, Bucky. I do want to go on that dinner with my friend, and you have no right what-so-ever to try and prevent me from going. We are not a couple, and even if we ever were, you couldn’t dictate me where I can go and with whom. If you are still interested in talking to me on Friday night, we can go out, and I’ll listen to you.” 

  “What if he tries something, or he hurts you or claims you without your approval, I mean-“ 

You had to smile at his behaviour. He was being a little possessive without reason, but he was so cute rambling about stuff he didn’t understand. “Bucky! I’ll be fine, I promise. I’ve known Stephen for quite some time, and he would never hurt or do anything I wouldn’t want him to.” 

This wasn’t a lie, Strange would really never hurt you. Well, he hurt your pride whenever you played any desk games with him and Wong, but that was a different story. 

Now it was Bucky’s turn to sigh. He knew you were right, he made it very clear that he didn’t want to be involved with you in any way, and now he had no right to tell you what to do. His whole being screamed at him to not let you go with that guy wearing a smug smirk on his face. But he had to let you go. For now. 

“Alright, Friday night, then? I’ll talk to Steve if he can let me go off that traffic-patrol bullshit and I’ll let you know, alright? Just… I know I had no right to ask, but… please, be careful.” 

You bit your lower lip to stop yourself from screaming or trying to kiss him or both. You knew you couldn’t just give in and just let him boil in his own sweat before you give him a chance. But the Omega in you wanted to strangle the rational part of your brain and just jump into your Alpha’s arms and let him do anything to you. And the anything was now played in your mind in great detail, and you gulped hard and prayed to God that Bucky didn’t smell the change in your pheromones. From angry to aroused. You needed to get out of there. 

“I will don’t worry, Bucky. Have a good night, and I’ll see you tomorrow.” With that, you felt Bucky’s grip on your shoulders loosen, and you pushed away from the wall and went quickly to grab Stephen and ran away out of there. 

Bucky had to take three deep breaths to calm his Alpha side down, and prayed for the morning to come to see your face, and hopefully bare neck. He was a goner, and he didn’t even realise it, yet.

Better Like This: Chapter 3: Tactics

Chapter Summary: You try to get closer to Bucky via his friends. What happens when your plan works out all too well?

It’s been almost two weeks since your first day at the unit. After trying a few more times to actually get Bucky to talk to you (unsuccessfully, of course, his growling would get the room quiet every time) you decided to ease off. You weren’t about to give up on your true mate. Not even close. His scent was intoxicating, and you loved spending your time in the office just so you could catch some lingering smell left after him. 

You decided to give him space and to let him come to you when he would feel like it. And you knew he would eventually have to feel like it, he couldn’t be immune, for christ’s sake. 

Meanwhile, you tried to get to know the team better. You and Scott became almost inseparable during those days, you’d spent a few nights at his house, dining there and getting to know Hope. She was the most intelligent person you’ve probably ever met and her beauty? Wow! You would always tell Scott how lucky he was to get a mate like her. He knew it, of course, but his ego grew whenever people saw his amazing mate by his side, always looking up to him proudly and lovingly. 

You even went for a beer with Tony, Bruce, and Natasha, having one hell of a good time. Tony and Bruce were so cute, you thought your teeth might rot from all the fluff around you. You were happy for them; definitely, it was just that you wanted what they had, and were kinda jealous. But only a little bit. 

You loved to bake and so every time you baked some cookies or muffins, you brought them to work, to make your colleagues happy and giddy like little kids. The first time you brought something with you, they all hugged you so tightly and pronounced love so loudly that you could just laugh and with the same breath promise them that you’d bake more. 

The only reserved people were Bucky, Sam, and your Captain. You knew they were all friends and shit, but you couldn’t understand why they didn’t talk to you when it wasn’t necessary. You got that Steve was your captain and that you probably shouldn’t be too familiar with him, but Sam? That was another story. And you had plans for that also. 

The case you were working on went cold after about a week, as there were no new leads, no witnesses and worst of all, the victim died during a surgery. You were still trying to figure some stuff out, but without sufficient evidence, there wasn’t much you could do. 

You were sitting at your table, discussing possible motives for the Omega’s murder with Scott, your baked goods on the table with only a few chocolate chip cookies left. You could see Sam entering the door, without Bucky, and you took your chance. 

You stood up quickly, grabbed the plate and marched towards Sam, with something as a piece offering cookies. “Hey, I saved you some, I didn’t know if you liked chocolate chips, but I took my chance. I swear I’m not trying to poison you, Sam,” you giggled and stretched your hand with the plate on it towards Sam. He smirked and shook his head but took one cookie nevertheless. Win! “Well, I must try some, Stark wouldn’t shut up about your blueberry muffin, so I guess you’re real good at this, huh?” And he is making small talk, you thought, yes! 

“They almost tore my arm from my body just to get to those muffins quicker, they are monsters, I’m telling you.” 

Sam laughed a little and then moaned. Kinda. “Oh my God, Y/L/N, these are perfect, I mean, they taste like heaven! What the… I’m one of the monsters now! You got me addicted!” 

“Uhm, thank you, I guess,” you giggled at the look in front of you. Sam was stuffing his mouth with your cookies with one hand, while the other was trying to pick as many crumbs, he could reach, to have a little more taste. 

“So chocolate chip ok with you, Wilson?” “Hell, anything’s good with me as long as it comes from those heavenly hands. And by the way, who doesn’t like chocolate chip, huh?” You’d laugh with him, but a vicious growl stopped you.

“Me,” Bucky said, chest heaving, jaw set and eyes almost glowing. With anger? Who knew, but you weren’t about to speak up, he looked like he’d kill you if you even took a breath. You didn’t know if Sam was oblivious to his partner’s posture and look, or if he actually wanted to sport a black eye, but he didn’t shut up.

“C’mon, Buck. If you tried Y/N’s cookies, you would’ ve-“ he was interrupted by another low growl. “I don’t need to try anything to see that it just doesn’t suit me. That I wouldn’t like it, even if I’ve never tried it. But I’m telling you, Sam, back off.” 

Never tried? Who has never tried a freaking chocolate chip cookie? Is he some gluten-free, sugar-free raw freak? (no offense here, guys) What the hell? You looked at him dumbfounded not really understanding what he was talking about.

There was probably going on a silent conversation between Bucky and Sam because they were staring each other down, you somehow in the middle of them, still looking at Bucky questionably. 

What you didn’t know was that the previous weekend, Steve and Sam ambushed Bucky at his apartment, with some cold beers and a take out. They desperately needed to find out what was really happening (or not happening, in this case) between the two of you, and because they are such nosy little shits, they needed to know it like yesterday.

Bucky was desperately trying to throw them out, really wasn’t in the mood to sit with tow assholes, no matter that they were his best friends. He knew what kind of questions would come up, and he was doing everything in his power to not succumb. 

Needless to say, he didn’t succeed. 

“SHE IS YOUR WHAT?” Sam yelled in the most high-pitched voice Bucky’s ever heard. “She is your fucking mate- no, no, no, she is your fucking TRUE mate, and you just what, ignore her? Growl at her? Have you lost your goddamn mind, Barnes?”

While Sam was having his little, although very loud meltdown, Steve was just shaking his head. He nudged Sam, who looked at him mid-sentence and immediately shut up when he saw Steve’s face. 

“So, you are telling us, that you were so lucky to have found your true mate, the one person who was literally made to be with you, made FOR you, and you decided not to act on it? That’s what you’re telling us, Buck?” 

Bucky stared into his best friend’s eyes, trying to get him to understand without actually having to talk about it. Steve felt it, he always did, but he wasn’t willing to let go. Not this time.

“I know you’ve been hurt and stuff, but, why do you think Y/N must necessarily be the same as-“ 

“Don’t even say her name. Why do I need to explain myself to you two? I’m a grown-ass Alpha, who decided to forever live a bachelor life and you should understand that. Or don’t, I don’t give a shit, just don’t tell me what to do or what not to do.” 

“Sure thing, buddy. Just one question, doesn’t her smell like, drives you nuts?” Sam asked him incredulously. “Her smell? Pff, no way, don’t even know what she smells like, told ya, not interested.” Everyone in the room knew it wasn’t true, and Bucky knew they knew. He was just glad they didn’t press him even more.

The truth was, he knew precisely what she smelt like, and if he closed his eyes, he could even feel you on the tip of his tongue. She smelt like freshly cut grass, with a hint of vanilla and coconut- the perfect mix of fresh and sweet at the same time. But he couldn’t think about it about you! 

Sam wanted to push his buttons a little more“So, you cool working with your true mate, not being able to touch her? Seeing other Alphas being all over her?” Bucky growled involuntarily. His Alpha side wanted to jump out of his skin, find you, and claim you so that no other Alpha would even lay their eyes on you. His logical side shook all those thoughts away. Nothing good ever came from an Omega, he reminded himself, trying to chase images of you with another man from his mind.

“Pf, you’re totally cool and not interested, my man.” This earned Sam a punch into a shoulder, which Sam knew would bruise, as it did many times before. He really admired his own shoulder for never giving up on him and actually not shattering after so many years of these hard-ass punches by his partner.

Steve was watching them with a smirk. All he wanted was for his best friend to be happy, to let his walls down and let you in. He knew at that moment he would not let Bucky ruin his own life. Not on Steve’s watch. 

So when you came towards Sam with those damn-good cookies, he knew he wanted to push Bucky to some action. Sam saw in Bucky’s eyes, damn, his whole posture, that he wasn’t having fun. Sam just couldn’t see if it was Bucky’s anger that Sam was actually bringing it up again, or if he was jealous. 

Your plan was simple: get Sam to like so that Bucky could see that you get along with one of his best friends and would get through his thick skull that he could get along with you too. The first part of the plan worked out all too well. Sam loved those cookies, and you two were having fun, well, until Mr Growling-All-the-Time came. 

Sam’s voice got you back to reality. “Well, if you aren’t willing to try, then trust me, someone will. For a start, I think these smell delicious and the taste? Wow, even better, ain’t it true, Y/N? What do you put in ‘em.”

You frowned but answered him nevertheless. “Uhm, sure, I guess, it’s my grandma’s recipe, the secret-not-so-secret ingredient is vanilla.”

“Aaah, vanilla, that’s it. I love me some vanilla, let me tell you, girl!” 

You were looking at Sam, not really getting where he was going, so what you couldn’t quite see was Bucky’s whole body going rigid, before he lunged at Sam from across the room. 

What Bucky didn’t seem to realize, was the closeness between you and Sam, so when he jumped at Sam, he inevitably had to go through you. He didn’t even seem to see you, the venom in his eyes was blinding him momentarily. And because you didn’t see him coming, you couldn’t duck, you couldn’t step away, nothing. You had only time to turn your head to see Bucky being almost on you and brace yourself for the impact.

The crush of three bodies was stronger than you would’ve anticipated. Bucky’s body collided mainly with yours, only his hands grabbing Sam and pulling him closer to him so he could get a good punch. Sam was as shocked as you were. He knew he was getting under Bucky’s skin, but didn’t think it would have such effect.

You fell down like a sack of potatoes. You tried to stop the fall by extending your arms (which must’ve looked great, like a little bird learning to fly but failing miserably) but failed mainly because your left arm caught the corner of one of the tables and you could only feel the searing pain shooting through your lower arm. 

You landed with a thud, accompanied by a louder thud, that when your head hit the ground after your body. You laid there, splayed like a starfish, all of your limbs facing different directions. You tried to blink away the black dots, but the more you tried to blink, the more dots you saw. You couldn’t hear any voices, the high-pitched ringing in your ears preventing you from hearing the whole team running towards you and the guys, who didn’t realize what was happening until Steve and Tony separated them.

They were both able to throw about two good punches, knowing they would both be sporting matching black eyes. “Enough!” Steve’s voice boomed through the room. “Are you two so childish you have to fight at the unit? Can’t you take it to the ring after the shift, huh? Not only are you disrupting the piece of the team and the work being actually done, but you also hurt one of our own too.”

With that, both men’s eyes shifted towards where you were standing before the fight occurred, but could only see Scott, Bruce, and Natasha being crouched above someone on the ground.

Bucky nudged Tony to his ribs so that he could get away from him and closer to you. He jumped to your side and tried to touch you, but someone’s hand stopped him in his movement. He looked up and saw it was Scott, with a threatening look in his eyes, holding him back. 

“Haven’t you done enough? You don’t need to pretend that you care about her well-being when we both know that you don’t.” 

Bucky growled. Again. “Get your hands off of me, Lang.” Scott wanted to say something else, but you groaned audibly from underneath them.

The ringing in your ears stopped, and the black dots weren’t occupying your whole vision, so you tried to blink the rest of them away, only to see Bucky and Scott above your head, Scott gripping tightly on Bucky’s hand, preventing him from touching you.

At one hand, you were super thankful to Scott, he knew how much you were hurting, and when you admitted that Bucky was indeed your true mate, you had your hands full with stopping Scott from marching into Bucky’s apartment and kicking him into his shin.

On the other hand, you wanted to feel what Bucky’s touch was like. You wanted to engulf yourself in his smell and just stay in that safe cocoon. 

You realized soon enough that Bucky wasn’t your safe place because he never once allowed you to come close to you and the side thankful to Scott was suddenly stronger. 

“Ouch, my head! And why does my arm hurt so fucking much?” you rasped, avoiding Bucky’s searching eyes. Everyone’s heads turned toward your arm, and a hiss escaped Bruce’s mouth. “Well, that’s a nasty gash, Y/N. I think you’ll need some stitches.”

You groaned again, now totally annoyed. “Awesome, that’s just… perfect, really, thanks, guys. What was that even about, Barnes? Jumping at us like that, because of what, goddamn cookies?” Your annoyance transformed itself into being totally pissed. You tried to sit up and suddenly felt a tingling sensation on your back from someone’s touch. Bucky. 

You really wanted to let him do anything to you as long as he was not growling and actually being there with you, but, at the same time, you were on the ground, bleeding and possibly with a concussion because of him.

You smacked his hand away. “Don’t,” was the only thing you said to him. “C’mon, Omega, let me-“ 

Now it was your time to growl. “Omega? Really? So suddenly, I’m an Omega to you? Till about 30 seconds ago, you didn’t want to see me, let alone speak to me and god forbid that I would try to touch you. You said you never wanted an Omega, so how about you let me alone here, with people who actually give a shit about me? Let’s not pretend like you’re one of them.”

You knew your words were laced with venom, but the two frustrating weeks, trying to catch his scent, trying to catch a glimpse of him, those two weeks took a toll on you. You didn’t want to admit it, but you were deeply hurt by Bucky’s behaviour. And you weren’t about to be a good submissive Omega. You didn’t want to be one of those girls who are being hurt continuously but are still fishing for attention, and when they get, they get all cuddly and wet. 

Nope. You wouldn’t give him that satisfaction.

He looked hurt, but you tried to ignore him, as Scott and Bruce helped you sit on the nearest chair. What you, therefore, couldn’t see, was Bucky’s face contorting into a pained expression, when you preferred another Alpha touching you, helping you. Bucky knew he had no right to be jealous, and if he were in his right mind, he wouldn’t even try to touch you, let alone call you an Omega. 

That was one of the most intimate or insulting ways to address a person one could imagine, depending on the person uttering those words. He knew he had no right for the level of intimacy it required and he definitely didn’t mean to insult you at that moment, it just slipped. 

Those two weeks, he tried to do everything in his power to stay away from you, but seeing you helpless and hurt on the ground? Hurt by him? That clouded his judgment, and he didn’t really care about anything but your safety and well-being at the moment. He didn’t get a grip on himself. He wasn’t about to let you hurt him the way Amber did.

He swore once that he would never let anyone that close and he truly wanted to keep his own promise to himself. The only problem was that you were starting to get under his skin, despite him preventing you in every possible way he could think of.

He was sure he wouldn’t survive another heartbreak, not from his true mate anyway. But he was drawn to you in ways he never thought possible. His heart secretly cherished every second he could spend somewhere near you and your intoxicating smell and your adorable laugh. Ugh, he was growing soft! 

His heart jumped when he heard you hiss because Bruce began the work of stitching up your arm and his head snapped towards the Omega helping you to get better, actually thinking he could stop Bruce from getting you into more pain.

He was stopped mid-way by Steve’s voice. “Wilson, Barnes, my office, NOW!” Shit, Steve was pissed, and he knew there was no way he would talk his way out of this one. 

Scott was holding your other hand, letting you squeeze the life out of it because the stitching was not as painless as you hoped it would be. He leaned in and whispered to your ear: “Well, he didn’t have to hurt you and he’s so up for some ass-kicking but one thing we know for sure, he’s not immune to you, and we have to use it against him.” You looked over at Scott, who was now smirking devilishly and had to laugh a little, before Bruce’s needle went through your skin again, followed by a very silent “sorry” by Bruce.

“So, what do you propose I do, Scott?”

Better Like This: Chapter 2: I Need Answers

Chapter Summary: You can’t wrap your head around the actions of what you think is your mate, so you try to distract yourself by diving into your first case with the SVU. You are, however, not willing to let go and you need your answers. Will Bucky talk to you, or is he going to try to stay clear from you as long as possible? And why is he acting like such a jerk?

You stood there, staring at the closed doors, your brain void of any thoughts. You wanted to think something, really, but your brain just stopped working the second the Alpha ran out of the door. 

You also didn’t hear the way the team shut up, trying to figure out what the hell just happened, and why did one of their own just bolt seeing you, as if the electricity went through his body. 

The first one to speak up was Tony. “Well, that was weird and awkward. That was Sargent Barnes, and the guy not running away from here is detective Sam Wilson.” Sam nodded your way and shrugged his shoulders apologetically, not really knowing how to explain his partner’s behaviour. 

You shook your head, trying to get rid of all the negative thoughts creeping into your mind once again and looked at the Captain, silently begging him to talk about something, anything really. 

He obviously took the hint as he spoke as soon as he looked your way. “Ok, that is almost our whole team, you’ll meet Clint, our tech guy later. So, to get to the work, before detective Y/L/N came in, I got a call from 76th precinct. They believe they have one of our cases. An Omega was raped and almost strangled to death in her home by what they believe was some young Alpha, but that is as far as they got. They would like us to take it from there, so, Y/L/N, Lang, you go to the hospital and talk to our victim, make sure they are treating her right. Wilson, go find Barnes, and you guys go the crime scene. And make sure Bucky calls me, he’s got things to explain. Stark, to the 76th precinct, get all the files they made for this case and debrief the detectives working on the case, the more information, the better. You know the drill guys, let’s get to work. Dismissed.” 

With that, he turned around and strode to his office. Scott jabbed you lightly to your ribs and pretty much dragged you out fo the place, for you were still very much frozen by Bucky’s (or whatever) actions. 

“C’mon dude, let’s go help some people. And you can tell me what that was all about in the car.” He smirked at you. 

“I wish I fucking knew, Scott. I-I-“you stuttered. You didn’t really feel the need to tell him how you thought Bucky was your true mate. You did know him for about 15 minutes. “I’ve never met this guy before, you know? No idea what’s his problem.” You shrugged, deciding that not telling the whole truth was just safer. For now. At least you thought so.

“I do believe you, dude, it was the little whine that’s making me question shit.” Fuck! “No idea what you’re talking about,” you shrugged, trying to sound as convincing as you possibly could. “I’m that kind of person who just wants to get along with everyone, so you just probably heard my disappointment when I saw someone obviously not liking me from the very first second,” you concluded. 

It wasn’t a lie entirely, you did want to get along with everyone, but you would never whine just like that, had you not had your reasons. Scott just hummed in response and the rest of the drive to the hospital was in comfortable silence. 

Meanwhile, in front of Sam’s car, the situation looked a bit different. He yelled at Bucky for bolting like this, wanting to know the reason. “What’s gotten into you, man? Do you like know her or something? Have you knotted her during your rut and never called her again, or what? Talk to me, man.” 

“I don’t know her, and I don’t want to know her, there’s that. Not that it would be any of your business, or anything.” Bucky almost growled. Sam just raised his eyebrow and sarcastically rolled his eyes. Bucky’s been his partner for the last 5 years, and one of his best friends for about the same amount of time. He knew when his friend was full of shit, but also knew when he should actually shut up if he didn’t want to experience the wrath of the Metal Arm. Bucky didn’t get this one of his nicknames coincidentally, and Sam was unfortunate enough to have been on the receiving end of the wrath far too many times. Bucky was a good guy, it was just that his temper got the best of him sometimes. 

“Yeah, before I forget, Steve wanted you to call him and explain yourself to him.” 

“I don’t need to explain anything, I went out, end of the story, now get in the car so we can actually start working, you ass.” 

“I’m the ass here, huh? Have you looked in the mirror today, Barnes? ‘Cause you’re the only one looking like a pile of shit.” Sam almost didn’t get to finish his sentence as Bucky punched his shoulder, but Sam was too used to it now. He just laughed and made a mental note to keep a good eye on his friend.

The talk with the victim was very short because her throat was so damaged, the only thing she was able to do (and even that she did barely) was nodding or shaking her answering your and Scott’s questions. All you got from her, was that she woke up in the middle of the night, feeling a certain uneasiness in her bones. This sixth sense of hers was true for right in front of her bed stood a tall man, an Alpha, with a mask on his face. You didn’t want to go in too much detail, and you really couldn’t because of her injury. 

You were actually lucky to have any kind of conversation with her because about 10 minutes into your “dialogue” she started to lose consciousness and they had to rush into the OR. 

But what you did get from the visit to the hospital, was the conversation you had with one of the victim’s doctors. She told you that the victim had what looked like bruises made by fingers, even showing you and Scott some photos they took so you could have a closer look. 

“Can we have those?” you asked, full-on detective by now. “Of course, we have one copy here for later examination and to contrast the healing, but these were made specifically for you.” You smiled thankfully at her and bid your goodbyes before heading towards Scott’s car (you guess as he was your partner that it would be ok to call the car yours too). 

“So what do you think we’re dealing with here?” Scott asked you once you were seated and on your way towards the headquarters. “I have no idea yet, but probably some sick bastard who can’t even show his face while attacking an innocent and helpless Omega.” Scott just hummed in agreement, and the rest of the ride was spent by talking about his Omega, Hope, who was a scientist and a hell of a one, from what Scott was saying. He was so in love, you couldn’t help but let your mind drift back to your mate, the one abandoning you in front of the whole team without as much as an acknowledgement. 

Once you came to the headquarters, you immediately smelt the most delicious thing, once again, your Alpha. Or rather, the Alpha you felt like should be yours but was far from it. 

He looked up too, only to shake his head as if in disapproval and continued his talk with Sam and Natasha. You wanted to do something, your mind was picking between breaking into a sobbing mess and smacking the Alpha across his face with the closest object you could find.

Before you could do any of the two (and you were suddenly more inclined to hurt the asshole), your Captain came in the view. “So, what’s the status? What did we find, team?” The room fell silent and everyone grouped into a half-circle so that everyone could see everyone. Yay, just what you needed!

“The detectives from the 76th didn’t really know anything, they spoke to some people who thought they heard some noises, but most of them were seniors who couldn’t really remember what day it was so there’s that. One guy, though, said that he saw a tall Alpha running by him, around 2.30 AM, which seems like the time the guy left our victim. But it was dark, and the guy couldn’t see much, so I’m not sure if we can get anything out of it. He’s in one of the conference rooms, and I’ll go talk to him and try and get more information, but I don’t think there will be much, Cap.” Tony concluded his findings. 

“The crime scene was a mess, Steve,” your Alpha (you had to remind yourself that he wasn’t your freaking Alpha) Bucky said. “We were able to get a picture of what happened and how it happened, but the techs were already there, so if he left something there, they would’ve found it. What we could tell, was that he got there from the window, motherfucker must have climbed the fire-stairs, unhooked the window and was it and the poor Omega didn’t stand a chance.” He shrugged and you could have sworn it was the sexiest thing you’ve ever seen. God, you were pathetic!

It was now your turn to speak up, and you could feel all the eyes on you. All of them except the ones you actually wanted to feel. You shook off the disappointment and told the team about your findings. Captain nodded after you concluded your little speech and dismissed all of you, letting you work on your own. 

You saw Bucky turning around and starting to leave the circle, and you decided to follow him. You needed your answers, and you needed them now!

“Hey, Barnes, can I have a word?” you whisper-yelled at him. He looked taken aback by your approach but shook off any emotion from his face before speaking up. 

“I don’t really wanna talk to you, so if I can choose, then no, you can’t have a word with me.” And with that he turned around and started to walk away once again. He had the nerve to walk away from you just like that! Naah, you weren’t having it, not this time!

“I would appreciate it if we could have a conversation, and somewhere private, preferably.” 

You didn’t even realise it, but he was not standing right in front of you, towering over you and silently growling. “We aren’t going anywhere together. Look, I don’t know what you think you feel but don’t. I’m not looking for an Omega, never wanted one, never will want one, so deal with it. You are all the same, and I want no part in that,” he growled the whole time and finally turned around and walked towards Sam, who was watching the interaction and silently waiting for Bucky to join him. 

Didn’t want an Omega? All the same? What? WHAT? You had no clue what was happening, and if it were up to you, you would’ve crawled under some table and just cry and pity yourself, because your true mate just basically rejected you. 

But, and for the first time today, you had Scott behind your ass the whole time, and you were really thankful for it, who now grabbed your elbow and dragged you out of the place. You looked towards the table which was shared by Sam and Bucky. Scott didn’t miss your tilted head, nor did he miss the very silent, but very present whine that escaped your throat. He looked towards that table too and put a protective arm around your shoulders to lead you out of there. 

“You don’t need to speak about it, but let me tell you one thing. Bucky- he is a strange guy. He is one hell of a detective, hell, he’s solved more cases than me, Natasha and Tony combined. But he is also very closed off, I mean, the first three months with the unit, he wouldn’t even acknowledge my presence, he would always look through me, or something. Only after I “proved” to him that I was worth his time would he start talking to me.

Look, I don’t know what his problem is, the Cap just told me he had it rough. All I know is that he was in a war and that it probably scarred him for life. I don’t know if he’s your true mate or what, but just… Give it time, let him see what I see the first second after meeting you and what I hope I’ll get to know more from now on. You are a fantastic detective, we all know that, and believe me, when I say it, you are an amazing person too. I can just smell that, call it a sixth sense, or something. So, just give him time, and if he doesn’t pull his head out of his ass, I’ll be the first one to beat the shit out of him.” 

You were now sitting in a local pub, each of you nursing a bear. You couldn’t help but wonder what did you do to deserve a partner like Scott, who after spending just one day with you, an Omega, for God’s sake, was willing to beat someone up because they were hurting you.

You smiled at him. “Thank you, Scott, you can’t even imagine how much this means to me. But trust me, if he doesn’t give up that attitude of his, I’ll be the first one breaking a chair on his back. You can beat him up after that.” 

Scott laughed at your little outburst and shook his head. “You’re something else, Y/N. But deal!” 

But while you were leaving with Scott, too busy with your own thoughts, Bucky was having some thoughts on his own. He had to stifle a growl threatening to escape his chest when he saw Scott protectively putting an arm around you, his Omega. NO! He had to stop himself from thinking about you like that. 

Of course, he knew you were supposed to be his from the very second he stepped into the office. He buzzed all morning, knew something was up, but never expected to meet his true mate. But he couldn’t let you in. Just couldn’t. His heart wouldn’t take another heartbreak, and that’s why he tried so hard to stay away from you, even though his Alpha side was screaming for you. Luckily, he had enough self-control to never let this side win.

At least he hoped so.
