Wastewater surveillance is a public health tool that can track the spread of pathogens. The virus that causes polio was detected in New York City sewage as part of such monitoring efforts. Social media posts, however, have incorrectly claimed the virus was found in tap water. Similar claims have been made about the monkeypox virus.

Poliovirus found in sewage in three European countries. What now?

Health authorities say European countries should ramp up their immunisation and disease surveillance efforts.

Health authorities are sounding the alarm after poliovirus was found in sewage in Germany, Poland, and Spain this autumn. None of these countries have reported actual cases of poliomyelitis, known also as polio, a highly contagious disease that mostly affects young children and can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis in severe cases. But local and global health authorities said the recent wastewater detections in Warsaw, Barcelona, Munich, Bonn, Cologne, and Hamburg should serve as a wake-up call for European countries to shore up their disease surveillance programmes and make sure there are no gaps in vaccination that could allow the virus to spread. While Europe was declared polio-free in 2002, it is still present in other countries, meaning there is always a risk that cases could be imported to European countries and begin to spread among unvaccinated people. “Anytime that you detect any poliovirus, in any form, from any source, in a previously polio-free area is unusual,” Oliver Rosenbauer, a spokesperson for polio eradication efforts at the World Health Organization (WHO), told Euronews Health.

Warsaw expands wastewater testing after poliovirus detection

Warsaw wants 95% of children and adolescents vaccinated against polio following detection of a mutated polio virus in wastewater.

The Polish State Sanitary Inspection has extended testing and intensified surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis cases after detecting a type 2 poliovirus in a sample of Warsaw's wastewater. The news was announced by the Chief Sanitary Inspector at a press conference. Poliomyelitis (also known as Heine-Medin disease, acute anterior poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis) is a highly contagious disease caused by an enterovirus. Anyone who is not vaccinated can contract the disease, regardless of age, although the highest incidence is among children under five years old. "This does not mean we have human cases. We are only reporting the presence of a mutated virus that could pose a risk to unvaccinated individuals," Dr Paweł Grzesiowski, the Chief Sanitary Inspector, told Euractiv. Poliovirus in Warsaw's sewage Following the detection of the poliovirus in Warsaw, the Chief Sanitary Inspector, the National Consultant in Infectious Diseases, and the National Consultant in Epidemiology issued a joint statement on the results of poliomyelitis virus activity monitoring in Poland. Grzesiowski emphasised that there are no effective treatments for poliomyelitis; care is purely symptomatic. However, the disease can be effectively prevented through vaccination.
