Okay so watching Monsters at Work and I gotta ask....

First Off: What the hell is going on with Johnny and Claire's kids genetics wise? Johnny has 2 eyes. Claire has 3 eyes yet their daughter is a cyclops? And don't get me started on their son...

Secondly: JOHNNY X CLAIRE???? Who's idea was this? Lmao

Honestly the only f/m Johnny ship I remember from MU fandom was (and I still follow this person even though they’ve moved on) from a really good artist who shipped him with Rosie Levin. The art was good and I was convinced. Sadly given the show and the fact he fired her: guess not!

(Also Sulley and Johnny were toxic college bfs in many corners.)

Eh overall it was kind of random but maybe the writers just spun a wheel for MU female characters for him to have kids with. I honestly don’t think it’s a big deal. Given his seriousness about legacy it makes sense to make him a father. Writers spin the wheel, it lands on Claire, done.

I do wonder how she’s taking her husband being arrested. Like: they should bring this up if a season three comes out. We don’t get to see a reaction. And their eldest child/daughter should probably get a say eventually too. Potential drama. I do have vague memories of Brock the jock bird being in a Claire ship but that’s about it. It’s because they’re the only characters they interact together with on any real level though in MU.

Monster genetics? I do recall Johnny looking like a stubby little thing in a portrait where he was a kid. That’s all I’ve got. Maybe they all have grandparents or great grandparents that can also account for their differences. Maybe Claire’s dad is a carbon copy of her son. Who knows. Mike has a blue clone running around. Duncan has a literal clone with facial hair. I think the basic idea with monster genetics is just to have fun with it.

Like I’m not sure but Tylor splitting the difference between his parents eye numbers probably doesn’t make sense either. His grandma gave him his blue colours but that’s probably it. You’d never think they were related otherwise. Monsters are very diverse. Recessive genes probably produce interesting characters when the right parents get together. Probably best not to think on it too hard.

Also adoption. Adoption can be a thing. Who knows. Maybe we can go dramatic soap opera and Johnny has a secret half brother who was a garbage parent himself and existed because Johnny’s father is a philandering bastard as is the wont of some CEOs. And so they adopted a kid who is actually his nephew and they’re hiding it from the kids and it’s going to be major drama in the future when it comes out. Skys the limit.

Legit surprised you didn't comment on this but what do you think about our first LGBTQ+ couple in the Monster's franchise (Cutter and Sunny)?

I am deeply supportive of Monster Yuri rivals to lovers. Cutter is a fairly minor character but it’s kind of neat to contrast kids shows ten years ago. (They actually get to kiss). I feel it was developed well enough especially considering they were minor characters. Their interactions were interesting and I was actually thinking ‘oh they should date’ when they first cropped up. Somehow I think I’d avoided spoilers of what was to happen between them but I still thought that.

In any case I feel like most of the new characters, the show did well with them.

This might not be the most involved lgbt pairing from a Disney show (see: the owl house) but still I’m glad they went there and it makes sense to me.

On a personal note: I was also amused because when I first saw Cutter I somehow completely mistook her for Betty briefly, (you know: the blue character Sulley pointed out in MI while he and Mike watched the advertisement).

Betty is a character who I once wrote as a lesbian who was friends with Sulley and who became friends with a freshly out of the closet Fungus (who was also gay) in a fanfic I didn’t finish. It was a minor subplot I considered in a scenario where Sulley and Randall could become friends despite everything (and Sulley is also worried about Fungus’ well being because Randall is… volatile). Kind of pointless personal anecdote but there we go!

NP! Glad you liked it. Honestly credit it on following a lot of people who’ve had thoughts in that area (I think it was irresistible revolution who first pointed out that he only seemed to care for the FN in flash backs) but like... it really seems that Zuko tries to sabotage his own character development for a long while during the show, holding to his imperialism even in the face of overwhelming evidence otherwise of his enemies being people.

Probably because it scares and confuses him. He think he’s a traitor as it is and man how traitorous is it to even possibly entertain the idea the enemy matters.

I think the first crack for Zuko was really The Blue Spirit but nothing before that. Before then he had bought it wholesale and hadn’t been challenged in this views on his nation’s conquest.

The Blue Spirit is perhaps in fact the very first time that we know of, that Zuko is directly confronted with this idea of the enemy being a person (pretty appropriate that it’s Aang actually!). It’s the very quiet moment of Aang speaking to him about his past after saving him. It’s really the moment that sold me on the show.

Zuko in response throws a fire ball, but still you can see the words hit and it affected him enough to call back to it two books later. But it scared him I think. I mean Zuko even sabotaged his capture attempt by doing that and doesn’t bother to give chase, instead slinking back to the ship unsure of himself. But he seems to have steeled his resolve in their next meeting, determined not to give in to ‘weakness’ being even more brutal with Katara and Sokka: setting a dangerous animal on them, charging full force at Aang in their next meeting.

And then once again later as mentioned with Song and stealing the ostrich horse, possibly fearing what it all means to make an emotional connection like that with an enemy. Also potentially with him deliberately outing his lineage and acting proud of it in Zuko Alone. Or even when he and Katara talk and seem to come to an understanding in the end Zuko makes the infamous decision of still joining his sister. Zuko lashes out when he’s afraid and goes to the base instincts he’s been raised to have which includes dehumanising the enemy as best as he can try. But Aang arguably was that first chip away at that idea for him, so in a sense it’s any wonder he goes full ham in their next meeting at that too. He doesn’t want to hesitate. Or be a traitor.

And for the FN at the time to be loyal means touting their own superiority and crushing others under their heel, taking whatever they want: as he tries to emulate.

But Aang...I think kind of did something important there even if it didn’t seem like it at the time. Even if it still took Zuko almost too long to realise the truth and many other things too to get there. But really it kind of began with Aang which seems fitting.

What’s your opinion on Hordak and redemption?

I have mixed feelings.

On the one hand Hordak is unfortunately not the first in a line of uwu~babee mass murdering dictator uwu~ we’ve had to go through in recent years which I’m getting more than a little tired of.

On the other hand he’s certainly better written then say Kylo Ren or SUs Diamonds for example (though that’s maybe damning him with light praise) and I can see why certain sections of the fandom like him and are gunning for him,  even if I’m not really here for it. 

I mostly get a bit ticked these days at those who seem to have this idea that Catra should  beg forgiveness from him  (haha nope- she was fully justified in tearing him apart: also sending Entrapta to Beast island was bad because of what could have happened to Entrapta- Hordak’s tears don’t matter on the subject whatsoever). 

Also the idea I’ve seen floating around that he should play some major role in Prime’s defeat and be the big damn hero of the series. Sorry folks: a minor role will probably be happening sure and he’ll probably end up alive travelling the stars with Entrapta (with getting a full eternal banishment from Etheria: a place he hates anyway- the feeling being very mutual), but in a show with mostly women and girls the last thing we need is a formerly bad bloke with a~tragic past~ stealing the limelight. That would be a terrible, terrible idea. Stop it.

So overall I’m not really here for it and don’t think it was a good idea to begin with, but I’ve accepted it.  At least we got to see Catra beat him to a pulp and Prime will fulfill the wonderfully evil and un-redemptive over lord villain we’ve all been waiting for.

Cats or dogs: Honestly love both, though if I ever get a place I can have a pet I’d probably get a cat since they’re lower maintenance. Dogs are super cute though. They’re just a lot of work.

Current time: 9:32pm

Favorite animal: This is difficult. I more have different favourites and types, like the barn owl is my favourite bird for instance or snakes (many different species) are the best reptiles. I also really like Tamarins/Marmosets and also Lemurs and other primates like the great apes who are our closest relatives. They’re really interesting in nature documentaries. Big Cats are also neat. Also various wild dogs. Elephants are also cool. Generally big herbivores I will have respect for as flesh tanks of death. Also deep sea creatures are creepy yet fascinating in their own way even though I want them a thousand miles away from me at the same time. In terms of UK mammals: weasels are also just super cute and it’s kind of funny when you see them dragging prey three times their own size. I’ve seen one a few times where I work.

I’ve really never seen it done before! Honestly people always stick him in hufflepuff which... doesn’t actually fit for me. It feels like an after thought. Hufflepuff more fits... Harry honestly for me. Like the hat only ever really considered Slytherin due to the piece of Voldemort he had. Harry never struck me as ambitious. At least not at eleven. That’s more Hermione to me. Almost ravenclaw my ass, Hermione is occasionally pretty terrifying and brutal at times and like hell is she not ambitious. She thirsts for knowledge yes but it’s like she has something to prove to everyone at the same time. She’s a snake to me.

 I’ve seen Ron in slytherin before which I think fits well too as his secondary house but ravenclaw is probably even rarer. 

Ron isn’t really stupid he’s just kind of lazy sometimes in canon it seems to me. (PoA being an exception when he takes over Hermione’s buckbeak defence. He can research with enough drive, he just doesn’t usually). Part of it probably down to not getting the point of trying if his brothers have done it all before most like. But to be in a different house means he has to do things differently now and might put the needed boot up his ass he needs. But maybe Ravenclaw has a chess club? It wouldn’t surprise me if most of the non quidditch clubs were ravenclaw led. Maybe he gets a special interest in a specific subject?

Like maybe thanks to some older kid in the chess club instead of divination he ends up taking up ancient runes and turns out to be good at it. Like if he can (...apparently) somehow imitate parseltongue (which is ridiculous but whatever) maybe he’s good at languages??
