Given that I’ll probably have done enough years to have made enough NI payments for my public pension by the time I’m 55 (I just can’t claim it until I’m 68… for now), I’m seriously considering making that age my aim for going “fuck it” and decreasing my work week hours to 30 no matter what job I’m in.

Like a soft launch retirement in a sense. Even though it’s not. It’s just that I could see the state pension age raising to 70 and I’m like… no fuck that. I am not working full time that long at the very least.

Kind of like the idea of gradually going down: like maybe I could even cut another day by the time I’m 65. But perhaps that’s crazy talk depending on how COL might be by then: so maybe a pipe dream.

I just think I need a more realistic age goal to work towards at least some sort of reduced work time because most of my issues with working have really been that five full work days is kind of…. aggravating to me. I don’t even mind my job most of the time? Even like parts of it. It’s just I wish I had three days off not two.

Granted by the time I’m that age I’ll probably have a different job anyway so…

Honestly given the fact Iroh invaded this city what… seven years ago? I’m guessing he’s proof and parcel another case study of how superman’s secret identity isn’t all that unrealistic especially in a city context with hundreds of thousands if not millions of people in the same space. Some of these guards were maybe pulled up to do shit on the front lines for all we know during that attempted invasion. It would have possibly been all hands at deck at odd points when the siege skirmishes flared: or at least they had family members that were involved. Kind of wild to think about. They do seem like the type of people who’d have at least seen the wanted posters for Zuko and Iroh at least! I know there seems to be the whole “there is no war” bizarreness to contend with: but I kind of doubt the guards are brainwashed like Jet was.

But.

Just like the fact people wouldn’t jump to the conclusion Superman has a secret human identity anyway, the idea of the former general (who was for a time next in line to the FN throne), would be serving in a tea shop in the city he failed to capture probably would seem silly to them. (Though it gets to be even more ridiculous when he’s living with someone who looks just like Prince Zuko with an easily identifiable scar: but overall Zuko is hardly the only one scarred by the FN anyway. Given Jet’s conclusions on it before Iroh blows their cover over cold tea).

The EK guards probably, if they even considered the idea for five minutes in the first place, wouldn’t ever think someone so famous do something so reckless. It gets to the point of absurdity that their fake identities become believable.

Turning spare room into a retro space

Had a…pretty bizarre and stressful dream where I was with my parents along with some extended side of the family (one of my cousins on my dad’s side and an aunt who married into my mums side?)

There was a couple of friends of my parents my brain invented: who don’t exist in real life. It was these two (married) friends plus their family of like seven young kids my brain had also completely made up.

I think the family were Jehovah witnesses… I have no idea where that detail came from: they seemed nice enough however, it was just a random detail my brain inserted and the kids weren’t sure of their exact ages because… they had no birthday parties. (Okay).

Then my brain invented that news had just broke out that the uk government had sold the Isle of Man to the US and Trump who was going to build a US army base and his own tacky mansion and golf course or what have you on it?? And I was freaking out over it in the dream asking “why” over and over.

I don’t think the uk government can even do that with the Isle of Man anyway.

Why my brain did that to me I have no idea.

Not sure why the Isle of Man specifically either though I guess if you want to control the Uk and Ireland it’s strategically placed I guess (?). I haven’t visited it since I was very young to the point the only thing I remember is trees and me and my sister being disappointed we didn’t meet a Manx cat.

The people I was with weren’t exactly thrilled with the news either (in the dream) but they seemed pretty blaze with it compared to me in the dream which also made dream me angry.

I even ended the dream by apologising for swearing in front of the kids and snapping but I just didn’t understand why on earth they (the uk govt) would do this and how they (the people I was with) could be so calm. The house didn’t look like any house I’ve been in. Though the garden at the end while talking to my cousin when dream me was (sightly) calmer reminded me of another aunts.

We only find the bangers! This is a really important thing to remember both when analyzing ancient literature and when comparing your own writing to historical authors.

The less brilliant stories don't survive because people didn't make a million copies of them to pass around. It's pretty much guaranteed that there were a hundred other Gilgamesh stories circulating around the same time that did in fact suck balls, and just as many that were solidly mid, but people didn't write them down as many times (if ever), so fewer (if any) fragments survived.

It's easy to get discouraged thinking that 95% of ancient writers were brilliant compared to maybe 5% of modern writers. But really, it's just that 95% of what survived came from those few truly genius writers. Everybody else was out there telling stories too, and finding audiences who loved them, and producing beautiful art, they just weren't lucky enough or famous enough to get their stories recorded enough times for us to piece them together from whatever fragments survived the intervening centuries.
