Mina’s close-encounter with vampirism has become the most fascinating aspect of this book to me. It almost feels like Dracula has burrowed into her personality since that night, the trauma of what he did living rent free in her mind and occasionally trying to take the wheel (I hesitate to draw a likeness to D.I.D.). Dracula being able to commit possession of his victims the closer they are to his influence sounds incredibly dark and stressful, and is absolutely a missed opportunity on Hollywood’s part (but that’s probably because they’re in too deep with the ‘Dracula is a horror-romance’ thing). Imagine if Dracula just fully takes over Mina once they get in the castle. Van Helsing suddenly has to deal with Dracula using Mina to kill him while he also has the brides to deal with, and it becomes a race between the polycule to kill Dracula that everyone hopes Van Helsing doesn’t take first in.
