Sad Fucking Death Meme: (Accepting)

They have the funeral, black stripes over badges and the church full to bursting. Cops and civilians, all the lives he’s touched over his years on the force. Hondo is the one designated to stand at the podium and speak about his life. 

The flag is handed to Luca’s father, the procession following all the way to the grave side service.

It’s hours later, when Hondo’s house is empty but for the team, stories shared between them and a couple of beers, that he slides the white envelope to Victor where he stands alone in the kitchen.

The world may not get to see where Luca’s heart was at, but the team would do everything to make sure it was handled right in private.

I think this is probably the third or fourth time I rewrote this, man. Every time I think I can’t fall for you more, I trip over something new about you. 

You make my life better. So much better. I always had the job, I knew that was going to be my legacy. And I’m glad for it. I’m glad that I got to carry on the Luca name in Swat. But I never thought I’d have this.

Somebody I want to stay with forever. 

I think about asking you sometimes. Just us and the team on the beach. A couple of rings. It doesn’t even have to be official on paper, Vic. I just want to spend the rest of my life with you. 

And if you’re reading this, I did. So remember that. Remember that I died living the life I wanted, with the person I loved. 

Go live a happy life, okay? Don’t let this get you down. Keep moving forward. Find love again. Live your life, big man! You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be loved and to not be lonely. You deserve to be fulfilled, and to be the best cop you can be. 

Don’t stop moving forward because of me. You know I’ve got your six.

He doesn’t mean to laugh at that. It’s a real nice thing to say, and he can tell by the way Tan is folded in on himself that he means it. He’s one of those types that has trouble with getting real. Luca thinks maybe it’s because of his time in Vice, but he won’t ask. 

People should tell you stuff because they want to, not because they have to. 

“You know, I uh...I wasn’t exactly what my old man wanted me to be. Or my grandfather. I mean, the cop thing...yeah. And the swat thing. But other than that, man? I might as well have been invisible without the uniform.”

The memorial service has been over for awhile now, the rookies are putting up all the chairs. Luca can see them through the window into the room. He’s glad for the fresh air. For the company. “I was too flakey. Too happy. You know my grandfather actually told me that once? He said Dom, real men don’t run around smiling like that.” 

He shakes his head with a little laugh, curling his hands into fists so that he can pop his knuckles against his palm. “Can you imagine being so uptight that you’re mad at a kid for smiling? And every single person here, they want to tell me how great he is. How he’s the best Swat ever had.”

Luca feels guilty, letting this all out. But he knows Vic is the one guy who would take it to the grave if he asked him.

“And all I keep thinking about is how miserable an old man he was. He hated Hondo. He said Chris had no business being in the field.” He hated Victor too, but Luca can’t bring himself to say those words. It’s not even the color of his skin that his grandfather would hate. It’s what’s in Luca’s head about him. Like he ruined a perfectly good cop just by being by him. 

(Just by liking him. Like...for real.)

“Hondo, man...he told me to forgive him. To let it go. But I can’t. I can’t give him a free pass because he was a good cop, Vic. Because that’s not enough. He wasn’t a good man.” And Dom? Dom is freaking terrified of how much of his grandfather is sitting in his old man, just waiting for Dom to smile too much at Victor Tan. 

“And that’s what’s important. Being a good man. You know?”
