I'm pretty sure my/our experience is pretty different from most polyminds but for us we had alter egos first, they were versions of us (or me, the main guy lol) that each had their own primary perpous, one of them was supposed to be the smart one that handled things like research, another was supposed to be the one who always got hurt, physically or otherwise. Slowly they turned into ocs, but they're still very important to us, we learned about polymind almost a year(?) after making giving those "alter egos" names. We personally identify primarily under the sub(?) lable Hivemind, due to this a lot of our ocs and kins are really just parts of our mind group(I'm not sure exactly what else to call it).
We've always used we/us to some extent our entire life, along with that we often find ourself latching onto certain characters, changing how we look and present ourself online to match up to that character, we've never been able to hold down one consistent persona, so it never quite felt like we had a full identity, but the term polymind has helped us a lot with it, it makes us feel whole to accept that I am a We, that We don't need to stay as one person.
We often see people talking about how separating our sub personalities is harmful, but to us it makes us feel seen, we've questioned if we were a system or not before, primarily during 2020's DID craze and then a few years after, but we very much don't have it (No we aren't in denial we just did research), having a term that almost entirely encompassing how we've felt for years is one of the most freeing things.
We're sorry of this comes off as ranty or poorly explained, we just wanted to share our experience in hopes it would give better insight into how and why some polyminds identify with the label.
