5 April 1722

Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen (1659–1729) discovered Easter Island.

Leading an expedition funded by the West India Company with three ships, Roggeveen was the first European to encounter the island, which was named for the day of its discovery.

The crew was struck by the sight of the island's moai statues that are an iconic aspect of the island to this day.

The va'a is a Samoan canoe which can also be seen on top of a Sogaimiti. Our Polynesian people were and are excellent navigators of the expansive blue sea. It has been said they have traveled all over the Polynesian Triangle and colonized over 1000 islands before 1380 AD and made it to the Americas between 1000 -1300 AD. We are considered the best navigators of the sea. #UrbanNesian

All September, and for the next our months, classic NYC experimental film series the Millennium Film Workshop will be curating weekly programs at Spectacle. 

The collaboration kicks off tonight with Polyneisan Triangle Program, an all-U.S.-premiere (and many world premieres!) selection of new film from the South Pacific, primarily by Samoan, New Zealand, and Cook Island Maori.
