The Moananuiākea voyage starts on 6/15

The Hōkūleʻa, a traditional-style double-hulled oceanfaring canoe, is about to start a 4-year circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean! They've been sailing around Alaska lately, where they're going to start the official journey on 6/15.

(Map from this announcement post [link]) The journey is planned by the Polynesian Voyaging Society [link], which is keeping alive Polynesian wayfinding (navigating on the ocean without instruments) and voyaging. They're super cool, check out their website. They have a bunch of neat videos about the journey so far on their Youtube channel [link]. Here's one with some absolutely gorgeous shots of this giant double-hulled Polynesian canoe hanging out around glaciers and huge snowy mountains.

I'm really excited to keep an eye on this.

LAST SHIP STILL SAILING WHICH ONCE FLEW THE KINGDOM OF HAWAI`I FLAG

Considered the world’s oldest active sailing ship, the 160 year old Star of India has been a fixture of the waterfront at the Maritime Museum in San Diego, CA for decades, drawing out hundreds every year to visit the historic vessel.

Built in the Isle of Man’s Ramsey Shipyard in 1863, the Star of India was originally named Euterpe. After eight years, it was sold to the London shipping company Shaw, Savill & Albion Line to transport emigrants to Aotearoa (New Zealand.) It racked up 21 circumnavigations before it was sold to the Kingdom of Hawai`i.  In 1898, the ship was reregistered to the US and renamed Star of India. Today, the Star of India is the last ship still sailing which once flew the flag of the Kingdom of Hawai`i. To honor the Hōkūle`a’s current visit to San Diego, the Star of India raised her sails once again for the first time in five years and sailed off of San Diego joining the Hōkūle`a as it arrived, flying the very same Kingdom of Hawai`i flag.

“The stars shine bright above Maui. Kala Tanaka sits on the sand overlooking the ocean on the west side. Kala is a voyager and an educator at Hui o Waa Kaulua, Maui’s Voyaging Society. When she stays on land for too long, she begins to long for the sea. But it hasn’t always been that way.”

"What do you think the Samoan women hand tattoo is for?" Well there’s an ancient navigation skill where Pacific navigators use their hand and the markings on their fingers to measure distances and angles of star constellations as they rise and fall in the night sky. This is brilliant navigator Kala Tanaka of the Hokulea measuring where she needs to go using her hand. You might have seen Moana do a weird version of it. Many Samoan hand tattoos have fish around the wrists and the stars and togitogi up the fingers. The thumb lays across the horizon while the fingers stand vertical as you align your markings with the stars. Every tattoo unique to that navigator's experience and knowledge. This would also tell you who the original navigators were. Pacific women. It is part of the Nafanua story we always overlook. She ruled all over Samoa and set up Tupa'i titles in villages on the complete opposite sides of Samoa. She didn’t walk there you know! She was an accomplished navigator. Had the opportunity to watch the premiere of 'Moananuiākea: One Ocean. One Canoe.
