These are some crazy guys right here. Crazy talented, crazy ideas and what a story. Nick Zammuto (the handsome guy turning knobs to make weird sounds) is such an inspiration. Living in a Brooklyn with his partner and having finished a Chemistry degree (PhD?), he grew tired of his old musical project, the city life and the cost of living (I’m sure I’m oversimplifying). So they decided to buy a plot of land in Vermont, cleared it out, built a house, built a studio, started farming, started living life like they wanted to. He was always a city boy, so had to learn all these skills. He makes crazy cool inventions (check his homepage) and seems like somebody who you could have a good conversation with, about most things. I’ll stop talking about my man-crush now. On to the song.
I mean, you can hear how talented they are, and what funky shit they do (watch the whole KEXP live, it’s brilliant). But what stands out for me is probably the best lyric ever composed:
I'm like Edison, I have a vision
I don't need your permission
To be a magician,
And now it's never night.
I mean, if that isn’t inspiringly clever or cleverly inspiring, I don’t know what is. It just blows my mind, how anti-authoritarian and pro-creativity it is. Have you ever thought how mind blowing it is that it’s never night anymore? And yes, I know Edison was a shitbag and a bit of a thief, but the side of him which worked tirelessly, throughout hundreds of prototypes, to make change arrive quicker (and I guess make a bunch of money?), it’s inspiring and scary to think one person can make so much of a difference.
