Happy Liberation Day! May 9th 1945 was the day the Channel Islands were liberated by Allied troops having been under occupation by the Germans for almost 5 years. The Channel Islanders experience of the Second World War was very different to mainland Britain and is described beautifully and sympathetically in the Jersey War Tunnels exhibition, which I highly recommend visiting when you are in the island. There are still people alive for whom the occupation is in living memory and their stories are both harrowing and heartwarming. It was a great privilege to share the day with my very own local boy, for whom this is the most important day of the year and learn what it means to part of this special place. . . . . . #liberationday #jerseyci #visitjersey #theislandbreak #pommedor #bankholiday #nationalholiday #thisanxiousadventurer #raisingtheflag #lestweforget #ww2 #occupation #livinghistory #sthelier #9thmay (at Pomme d'Or Hotel) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxQH3nND92G/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=59l7z6w91c24
