Thoughts: Damn, do I love a good mashup. And one of my favorite kind of mashups are song-focused ones. The ones that take one song and center the entire mashup around it, modifying with distortion and other samples. It's a shame that so few do it, the only ones I can really think of off the top of head that do it are DJ Earworm, Furtet, and- oh yeah- Calvin Hansen.
WTA JRK is Calvin Hansen's remix and mashup-centered solo project. You might know him as one half of Starship Amazing, who I may or may not feature sometime soon. He's been doing this mashup thing for several years now, but by far his most popular song is his Panty & Stocking-centered remix, Fly Like a G6, Bitch.
And beyond the popularity of Panty & Stocking, it's very apparent why. WTA JRK's other Girl Talk-esque tracks are great too, but it's these song-focused mixes where his songwriting background really shine.
This remix of the tumblr-famous PON PON PON turns this sugary pop song into a hard hitting hip hop track, and it totally works. Dropping the pitch on Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's voice turns her cutesy voice into something much more laid back and, dare I say it, groovy, baby. The Waka Flocka Flame samples are goofy and totally work. The drums are laid back yet still hard hitting.
Fuck man, everything in this track works. This is a great entry into the works of WTA JRK. If you can only listen to one mashup...you should probs listen to Girl Talk's All Day album. But try to sneak this one in too, k?
