This was my first totally wild orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) ever. He was on a big fruiting tree right above the lodge were we stayed along the Kinabatangan river. He was not alone, another female with her young was close by. While I was observing them I couldn’t stop thinking of the uniqueness of the moment, a privilege to meet one of the other big primates that still live on this planet, against all odds. Their home is being destroyed by human greed, I know that. But in that particular moment I wasn’t thinking about conservation issues or anything related. I was in total awe, looking up, mouth open, heart beating hard.
