Poolinale 2016, April 14-17, Top Kino & Gartenbaukino
As you all already know, this year’s Poolinale follows a highly political theme and aims to put the spotlight on the social power of music. Yes, there will also be the Amy, the Ziggy Stardust, the Daft Punk and the Janis - but I’m more intrigued by these three gems of this year’s selection:
In 2012, Islamic jihadists banned music in northern Mali. The documentary They Will Have To Kill Us First portraits the struggle and rebellion of musicians, living in exile.
Songs Of Lahore follows a classical ensemble from Pakistan living in a place that has lost a lot of its culture due to oppression, war and ethnic division. The film centers around the ensemble, their mix of traditional and Western music, and an invitation to play in New York.
The third highlighted country is Cambodia with Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten, portraying the country’s vivid Rock’n’Roll music scene of the 60s and 70s - and what was left of it after the war.

Oh! You pretty things, wir haben wieder was für euch. Die Poolinale ist seit 2011 ein Fixpunkt im Festivalkalender und geht kommende Woche in die nächste Runde. Dabei geht es hier gar nicht um Livekonzerte und Campinggelände, sondern um Musik auf der Leinwand. Das diesjährige Programm der Poolinale hat den ganz explizit politischen Leitfaden “Musik als elementare gesellschaftliche Kraft”. Kann es einen besseren Rahmen für David Bowie geben, der mit seinen unzähligen Bühnenfiguren immer wieder gesellschaftliche Grenzen ausgelotet und ausgeweitet hat?
Wir verlosen 1x2 Tickets für das Special Screening von ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS im Rahmen des Musikfilmfestivals POOLINALE 2016. Der Film wird am Sonntag, dem 17. April 2016 um 16:30 im Wiener Gartenbaukino gezeigt.
