max would be sooo confused when she walks into billy with a pretty scrunchie in his wrist ???? and then she starts finding little stuff all around his camaro - a lip gloss, the wrapper of a type of gum he absolutely despises, or a small pair of earrings by the key bowl at their place 😭 i just love to think of how confused max would be until she finds out he has a gf

Max first notices the pink scrunchie on his wrist when he's getting something from the fridge, her face scrunching up and doing a double check to make sure she saw correctly.

"Is that one of my scrunchies?" She asks, her voice laced with confusion.

Billy pauses and glances down at the scrunchie on his wrist before scoffing.

"Why would I steal one of your weird scrunchies, shirtbird?"

And she watches as he walks back into his room with the carton of Orange Juice before Max realises she doesn't even own a pink scrunchie.

She begins to notice small things in his car too. Like a cherry-flavoured lipgloss, and it's definitely not hers because she doesn't like cherry-flavoured things or lipgloss.

She also starts finding Big Red wrappers in the backseat, which confuses her because Billy hates cinnamon and wouldn't allow anyone to have it in his car, including Max.

She's also shocked when she sneaks into his room looking for a cassette, why does his room smell like lilacs? His room usually smells like his gross cologne and cigarettes.

She wasn't stupid either, she knew that Billy had girls, lots of them but they never left things, he made sure of it.

No connection or reason to come back.

She's even more confused when she finds a pair of strawberry earrings in the bowl by the door, where Billy always haphazardly threw his keys when he decided to come home.

Though, she pauses when she hears.... giggling coming from Billy's room.

She was used to weird and gross sounds but never giggling. Billy hated girls who giggled and tried to act cutesy around him. He wanted them for one thing and one thing only. He never kept them around to make them laugh.

She's sitting at the kitchen table, when she watches in amazement as you and Billy walk out of his room.

And your wearing one of Billy's shirts? He never leant his shirts to girls and is he smiling?

Billy simping and max being all shocked.

Like, Max was half an hour late for Billy to pick her up from school. She thought he would make her walk. He is still waiting.

She notices he smiles more. He is more patient.

And the one day Max goes into Billy's room, and notices it smells .... Like perfume?

She is confused and then she sees something she should not have seen . There is a bra on his bed so she runs like hell out of there.

She assumes it's just a hook up

But then she notices you hanging around, again Doesn't think anything of it. Until!

When you are billy we're 'studying' she hears a text book hit the floor.... And she walks in on you guys making out

The first time Max notices that something is different is when she's a half hour late meeting Billy in the parking lot, Lucas and Dustin had insisted on showing her the costumes they were working on for Halloween already and she's fully expected to see Billy already gone and him brooding at home because she made him wait an extra ten minutes.

What's she shocked is seeing Billy still leaning against his Camaro, a cigarette hanging loosely from his mouth and a bored expression on his face.

"I know I'm late." She mutters approaching him, her head down.

"It's fine." Billy mutters, throwing his cigarette away and getting in the drivers side of the car.

Max stands there, shocked for a moment. There was no fight? No harsh words? No threatening to have her skate home for the rest of the week? She gets in the passenger side of the car, studying Billy carefully, he glances at her.

"What shithead?"

Max wonders if this is a prank, but instead, he just starts up the car and speeds out of the parking lot. He doesn't say anything for the rest of the trip home, just drumming his fingers on the steering wheel as the music fills the car.

Something also seems different; she catches Billy walking around the house with a slight smile on his face. He never smiled, especially at home. He was always on guard at home, never smiling or saying something but he was smiling and didn't seem so... angry all the time anymore.

"What are you staring at?"

She's broken away by Billy's words as he's staring darkly at her. She shrugs her shoulder.

"Nothin'"

"Want a lift to the arcade? It's too hot to skate."

Her eyes widened at his statement. He never offered to take her anywhere unless he was going somewhere first, and he didn't have any plans today.

"Thanks, that's really nice of you."

Billy scoffs and grabs his car. "Don't think anything of it, shitbird. It's hot out, and you're pale as shit. I don't want you whining about sunburn all week."

And Max definitely knows something is different when she enters his room, smells a sweet perfume,, and catches sight of something pink on his bed.

Going into Billy's room always felt like something forbidden. It was where Billy kept everything away from the world. It was solely his, and she didn't like disrupting his peace, and besides, she was terrified that she would find something really gross in there.

She walks a little closer and her eyes widen when she realises the pink thing was a bra, quickly backing out of the room and slamming the door shut behind her.

"So gross."

It wasn't uncommon to find girls things in Billy's room, he was always bringing girls back, sneaking them in and out under Neil's nose and Max kept his secret because she knew what would happen if she spilled the beans and she didn't want that.

Even for a shithead like Billy.

She notices you coming around, which wasn't unusual but you came over more than once and she didn't hear any gross sounds coming from Billy's room except some laughter.

And maybe it might make sense. Maybe Billy actually liked this girl. Perhaps that's why he was nicer to her, smiling, and the anger seemed to be slowly leaving him.

She's even more shocked when she comes home and finds the two of you studying in the living room.

He definitely didn't study with girls, nor did he smile at girls when they weren't looking at him like he was currently doing.

"What are you-"

"None of your business, Maxine."

She huffs and makes her way into the kitchen. She glances at the living room when she hears something hit the floor. Walking curiously back into the living room, what she didn't want to see was Billy atop you on the couch, making-out heavily.

Billy pulls away and glares at Max.

"You have a bedroom, like right there!"

Billy rolls his eyes, almost pouting when you push him off you and smile softly at Max.

"She's right, she doesn't want to see this. Come on."

Max watches, shocked, as Billy gets up and hurriedly follows you without saying anything. He never did what girls told him unless it was to do something disgusting and things she did not want to think about.

"I think Billy is in love." Max calls out in a sing-song voice.

She's greeted by your laughter and Billy telling her that he wasn't afraid to lock Max outside for the night.

He hadn’t exactly planned to fuck you in the kitchen, but you had bent over to get something, giving him the perfect view of your panties beneath your skirt, and that had been enough to have him come up behind you, sit you on the counter and bury his head between your legs.

Billy shrugs his shoulders helplessly. “I thought you were at El’s. No one else is home.”

“That’s not an excuse, Billy! People eat here. I eat here.”

“I know. I just ate here myself.” And you nudge Billy as Max groans and blocks her ears.

El is just looking confused between the three of you, trying to figure out what was so bad about being in a kitchen.

“Billy! You are so gross,” her attention turns to you, standing sheepishly beside Billy. “I expected better from you." Shaking her head sadly at you.

"Whatever, shitbird, it's not the end of the world. Just don’t eat directly off the counter. I’ll clean it later.”

Billy grabs your hand and leads you towards his bedroom; you shrug in apology to Max and El, both still standing there.

“Why is it so bad he was eating in the kitchen?” You hear El ask curiously and Max groaning. “He was hungry.”

“I’ll have to lend you another one of my mom’s Cosmo’s.”

I keep imagining that Billy and his girl have an unplanned pregnancy and neither knew Max was there and heard the discussion until she pipes up with a "I don't know how this is a surprise, you two are worse than rabbits!"

"That one definitely looks negative."

You sigh as you stare at the six pregnancy tests on the kitchen table. All of them are very clearly positive but Billy was determined to find at least one negative amongst them.

"It's positive, Billy." You mutter.

This was definitely unplanned, you were both only eighteen for God Sakes, just fresh out of high school and now this- you had no idea how it happened.

Okay, well you knew how it happened.

If there was one thing you and Billy had it was a very active sex life.

"I still think it looks negative." But the glare you send him quickly makes him snap his mouth shut.

"What the fuck are we going to do?" Billy breathes out, running a shaky hand through his curls.

"I have no idea."

You'd always wanted to be a mother but not at eighteen. Sure, you loved Billy and wanted to spend the rest of your life with him but children could wait, maybe another ten years.

But now you knew that that little thing was growing inside you, something you and Billy had created. Something you both could love.

Billy gets a panicked look on his face before nodding his head. Sure, the idea of being a father scared the shit out of him, but maybe he could be a good dad? He knew you'd be an amazing mother.

"I just don't understand how this fucking happened."

You both jump at the small voice behind you, turning around and seeing Max with her arms crossed, a disapproving look on her face.

"All I ever hear is gross noises coming from your room, pregnancy happens when you have sex that much, seriously it's not natural."

"How much did you hear?" Billy asked.

"All of it. Guess I should say congratulations?"

Billy narrows his eyes at Max. "Don't breathe a word to Neil or Susan, you hear Shitbird."

Max nods. "Understood, but I want to make one thing very clear,"

You both look at her expectantly.

"I am not babysitting."

i just think max would dreaaaad whenever billy and his gf have a fight. because he is only tolerable when he’s with her and now that his gf is pissed at him he’s so going to make it everybody’s problem. max would probably beg her to forgive him so she can keep her sanity lol

Max cringed as she heard you angrily slam the front door behind you and Billy standing there, his body stiff, and she already knew the expression on his face. You didn't fight very often, but she dreaded it when you did. It meant that Billy would be in a bad mood, worse than usual, for the next few days.

"What did you fight about?" She asked curiously, Billy turning around and glaring at her.

"Fuck off, shitbird."

Was the only reply she received before he angrily retreated to his room, another angry slam of a door and she sighed, she was in for a rough next few days.

The sound of Metallica filling the house.

"If you're not here when I'm done, you're walking home." Billy snapped at her as she climbed out of the Camaro.

He threatened her with walking home only when you two weren't speaking. Otherwise, you'd place a gentle hand on his arm and remind him that she's allowed to have fun that didn't revolve around his schedule.

She knew exactly where to find you, at your job at Barnes and Noble at the Mall. Which she liked because you were always giving her free books. You'd even given her an excellent book on skating history in California.

She finds you slouched over the service desk in the store, a sad expression on your face and bags under your eyes. Billy hadn't slept either, and she figured you hadn't.

"Hey kid," you said in a sad voice, a slight sniffle in your voice, hinting that you've been crying.

"You need to make up with Billy."

Max watches as you frown and sigh, shaking your head. "It isn't that simple.."

"No, you don't get it. He turns even more into an asshole when you fight. I didn't think it was possible, but it is. You need to make up with me, if only for me. I can only take so much Metallica and Motley Crue."

You sigh once more, smiling sadly at Max.

"Let me think about it, okay?"

Max nods her head.

"Just please make up with him, for everyone's sake."

Max was relieved to see your car pull up outside the house after your shift at work, and you stroll up the driveway.

"Billy!" Max called out happily, "you have a visitor!"

The Metallica pauses and Billy storms out of the room, a frown on his face but softening when he saw you standing awkwardly in the doorway.

"We need to talk."

Max watches as Billy leads you into his room and slams the door.

She lets out a relieved sigh and turns back to her comic book, at least Billy wouldn't be stalking around the house with a scowl on his face, just looking to pick a fight with someone now.

Max glances over at the door when she hears a sound coming from behind it, scowling for a moment before her eyes widen when she realises what the sounds were.

Maybe she would've preferred Metallica and Motley Crue on repeat over that.

"Ugh, so gross." She mutters, gathering up her comic book and quickly retreating to her bedroom where her earplugs happily waited for her.

Okay,, one aspect I like about s3 is that it seems Billy has just become Max's annoying, gross older brother. We don't really see Max afraid of Billy anymore (non-flayed), but rather just grossed about him like any young sibling would be.

And I wish we got to see that sibling dynamic explored more.
