Passing Out Parade 2016
hey so, before I go into detail of today’s events I just want to clarify about Singapore’s education system.
Ages 6-12 are in primary school, before they sit for a national exam which will determine what stream best suit their learning style. In Singapore, the most basic streams & educational pathways are Express, Normal Academic and Normal Technical. So, once the results of the first national exam is out they will be posted to their own fitted stream.
From there, they will serve four years in secondary school (( five years, if you’re in Normal Academic and wish to take O levels )). Then, at the end of the four years they will sit for another national exam whereby it will determine your tertiary education. In Singapore, the only three recognized tertiary education is Junior College, Polytechnics and ITE (( Institute of Technical Education )).
But for now, this isn’t related to the tertiary part although it will affect me very shortly. Right now, I’m in Normal Academic, Secondary 5 this year. Since basically among the three streams, their fourth year is their last year in secondary school.
My school, Peirce Secondary, doesn’t have the NT stream so its just NA and Express. Most of my closest are from Express so yeah, it’s been pretty hard to settle in a too familiarized area but not enough recognized faces.
Today was the Passing Out Parade 2016 for the seniors and I. Because I was considered a senior last year, I actually went through POP once. It was more heart wrenching as compared to this year’s. Although I got to step down together with my section and best juniors ever, I just couldn’t shake the feeling away of 2015’s.
Perhaps everytime I look at my presents, I remembered the pile of goodies last year on my bed, as I sat cross-legged on the floor, reading each letter with teary eyes. Thinking back, this year I felt much more indifferent. More neutral.
But there’s a confession - I cried. Not because of POP 2016, but because I really miss K & G a lot. They were the life of band, and the three of us were unstoppable. I love them to bits, and it hurts to know we aren’t in the same school. That’s one emotional con of being a Secondary Five.
The picture before this post was taken a few hours ago, together with the graduating juniors and I. The picture that I will post after this was taken last year, immediately after our SYF competition.
I guess, what they say is true - nothing beats the originals and damn, am I homesick for them or what x
