[“You need to wake up because I can’t do this without you.”]
[“Please, don’t leave.”]
Everything was dark, he was in pain, and someone was whispering in his ear. Steve wanted to react, let the person know that he could hear them, but his limbs were far too heavy.
There was another voice, and while he still couldn’t understand what he was saying, he recognized Dustin’s voice. Right, he was with Dustin, Robin, and Erica; they were investigating Russians and had been caught.
The voice was back again, the one that wasn’t Dustin. “Come on, Steve, you just gotta open your eyes,” it said.
“He’s breathing again, right?” It was a good sign that he could understand Dustin, finally. “Don’t go towards the light, Steve! Don’t leave!”
“Stop yelling,” a third voice, Erica, snapped. “You’ll get us caught.”
“If more Russians come, Billy can just Terminator them,” Dustin said.
Terminator? Billy? Steve felt like he was trying to lift a thousand pounds with his eyelids, and the frustration was starting to get to him. There was no way that Dustin was referring to Billy Hargrove of all people. Though if he knew a Billy that could go ‘Terminator’ it would be him.
“Yeah, what was the deal with that,” came Robin’s voice. “Your arms looked…weird.”
“It was still in control.” Now that Steve was listening for Billy, he supposed the voice really did sound like Billy. The manic laughter and yelling from that night at the Byers House was burned into his memory, sometimes Steve forgot Billy normally had a deep, smooth voice.
“It?” Dustin asked.
“I broke free when I saw them take you.” Steve could physically feel Billy’s breath in his hair. “You need to wake up because I can’t do this without you. I can’t fight it.”
“You’re starting to freak me out,” said Dustin. Then he made a sudden noise and exclaimed, “why is your skin so cold?”
Steve was just starting to get his finger to twitch when Billy responded.
“He likes it cold.”
