realizing that the characterization of Falin being more dragon-like is a really fine line to toe because like. In terms of pure magic and biology the dragon is a teeny tiny part of her. It wouldn't actually affect her in ways beyond her control. She's not really a Dragon Girl so much as a chimera with like. 10% dragon at most

But Falin herself really, REALLY likes being part monster. She would most likely lean into it and enjoy making it part of her identity/how she sees herself. So when you're writing from her perspective, you get this very weird balance of like... Falin attributing things about herself to her "dragon side" in ways that aren't necessarily true. Or her taking a very minor urge/instinct, incorporating it into her existing desires, and just running with it because it makes her feel cool.

anyway idk where I'm going with this, I just wanted to say that like. I really like that Falin's world bible blurb emphasizes that "she is herself, first and foremost." when I talk about her being very Dragon-y, it's because she gets to choose to be that way and I think it's neat!!

Actually I lied one last thought before I sleep. Marcille says she's opposed to the use of anaesthetic spells while healing but never says one bad thing directly about Falin or Falin's healing. Like that exchange almost seems uncharacteristically mature on her part with how she's able to staunchly stand by her own methods without belittling those who do it differently than her. A few possibilities:

Despite her being overbearing and in denial of Falin's maturity/autonomy in most other aspects, she truly did respect her as a fellow mage and physician when they were adventuring together

Alternatively, she was on a permanent "I'm never allowed to think anything bad about Falin ever" horseblinder mentality so she repressed her professional disagreement

Regardless, damn that bitch gay even if she didn't realize it yet

Okay please, I just adore how you talk about Marcille!!

I feel like a lot of people don’t like her as much, or more like they don’t like her as a character or just completely ignore her character growth etc. So it’s so sweet to see someone who GETS IT. Haha

AHa thank you so much!!! I get what you mean. Marcille is like... because she's written so well, I think she can induce polarizing reactions in people. On one hand, you have the people just dismissing her as a prissy uptight girl who's overly mean to the boys.

On the other hand, her fans unfortunately can have the tendency to be too charitable about her. Like, they kind of don't see the fact that she can be so horrendous sometimes? So hypocritical? that she absolutely should not be allowed to date Falin until she gets her shit sorted?

I think she shows an insane amount of complexity that changes and grows throughout the story. The Marcille at the end of the story is so much more mature than the Marcille you meet at the beginning. I kind of just want to wave her around like... isn't that wonderful, that she started as such a close-minded and scared child, only to very nearly cause the end of the world and then grow immensely from it? that she is so deeply flawed and damaged and lets fear rule so many of her actions, lets fear poison the way she treats Falin (almost like a beloved pet than a full person), but ultimately decides she'd rather learn how to be brave than die scared? That the audience is genuinely unsure if she would have been able to be truly brave without the love and support of those around her? That beneath all the immaturity and prissy hysterics, she is fundamentally motivated by unfathomably deep love--for better and for worse?

She is still cringe in her most profound moments. She is still profound in her most cringe moments. She contains multitudes beyond what can be explained in so many words and I really really really let this post get away from me

if you're ever wondering why some japanese fantasy media with meticulous worldbuilding randomly has like normal-ass months and dates. it's bc calendar months being named after specific myths or historical figures is not a thing in east asian languages, all months are just called month 1, month 2, month 3, etc. so setting a normal date based on a 12-month calendar doesn't actually seem incongruous with fantasy
