I don’t look in on Hal, because we don’t talk though we are still social media friends. He’s not online much, maybe once a year. But when I looked in on him recently, he had deleted a lot of his posts. All the way back to 2021. As near as I can tell, this was before he fell hard for NFTs, singing of their promises of gold. 

So, he has erased some of his history, deleted what I imagine was a huge mistake that consumed so much of his energy and time and money. He once told me his tattoo served the same purpose as the tattoos in that movie Momento, but I hope not, considering the “punch line” of the movie. I should have clarified that statement with him. 

I get that social media posts are not a flesh and blood reminder like a tattoo. I get wanting to take down posts that will lead people in a dangerous direction. I get wanting to hide the shame of being so taken in. I suppose a simple single post saying, "I was wrong," is probably not enough to reduce all posts he made to a simple oops. Easier to erase them, I guess, than expect one post to fix it. But it seems like a mistake to erase because one is more likely to forget, and to erase that cautionary tale that we could all learn from. There’s no post written to tell us that. 

I wonder what he would say about that period of his life if he were asked. And I wonder how often he has done that in the past.
