Bruce Conner’s wide-ranging practice tackled the fears, contradictions, and desires of post-war American culture, from the looming threat of nuclear destruction to the ascension of consumerism and materialism.

In paintings, drawings, collages, prints, performances, photographs, sculptures, and films, Conner probed the depths of the American subconscious. He produced haunting black-and-white photograms and daring found-object assemblages.

His boundary-pushing, avant-garde films featured both fast-paced montage and deliberate, meditative pacing: A Movie (1958) and Crossroads (1976) became celebrated works of experimental cinema.
