Herbert shuffled into bed next to Mikhail.
Although it was quite late, the large man was still awake, his comically small glasses compared to his large hands sat on his bumped nose, as it’d been broken in his youth. On his side of the bed the green colored lamp that they’d bought together when they first purchased their home stay lit, dimly lighting the dark room with a warm yellow tone. It sat on the old side drawer, the lights bounced off the dark forest green sheets gifted and made by Mikhail’s mother a few years ago.
Herbert had just finished wrapping up work, tired and exhausted from completing the medical reports of Jeremy’s 9 children. He adjusted in bed next to his husband, taking off his glasses and placing them to the side. He was always very cold, and on rare occasions surprisingly hot. But as it was a cold winter night in December, he was likewise freezing. Herbert raked his hair out of his face with his fingers, letting out a long sigh after a long day of work.
“Are you alright, my dove?” Mikhail asked, marking his page in his book and placing it to the side. Although his hands were large and scarred from their previous days as mercenaries, they would now carry gentleness and softness.
“Ah, ja. Was just a long day. Nothing else, really,” Herbert nodded, his eyes looking at the lamp. It was starting to hurt his eyes, as he’d spent the last couple of hours staring at writing under the fluorescent lights of the small family clinic he now worked at.
“Mm, da. Had to break up fight at work. College students, can you believe?” He mumbled, as Mikhail moved without question, taking off his own reading glasses and switching the small trigger so the light would shut off. Now, they were in the dark, and all that could be heard was the shuffling of them both moving closer towards each other. Herbert felt Mikhail’s strong arm wrap itself around him, the warmth radiating off of him like a giant bear.
“College students? A fight? Vhat did they do vhen they saw you coming, run like babies?” Herbert joked, and the other man let out a soft chuckle in response. “Basically. I’m sorry your day was long. Must be boring, sitting at desk and not doing fun.” He shook his head. “Vas okay.”
The two sat there in silence, comforting silence, the type you grew to have once you’d known each other for years.
Herbert gently stroked Mikhail’s cheek, feeling his beard, and then his lips, connecting his with them. It wasn’t a longing kiss, one that had lust or need. Just a soft kiss, one that brought comfort and peace to the two. When they parted, Mikhail gave a few more kisses on his husband’s face, gently and quietly. Both of their eyes had closed by now, but lying in the dark together and hearing the soft gust of the winter wind had nearly lulled them to sleep.
Before Herbert knew he was going to drift away, he whispered into Mikhail’s chest, “Ich leibe dich, Mikhail.”
And in return, Mikhail leaned into Herbert’s hair and murmured, “Ya tozhe tebya lyublyu, Herbert.”
Then, soft snoring and breathing could be heard too.
