Maya Angelou -Oil on Glass Here is the conceptual piece for my art assignment 😊 this is the first time I’ve ever used oil paints (I probably should’ve practiced before using them on glass :/)
A poster created to advertise Maya Angelou’s meaningful poem, Still I Rise. The reasoning behind using lower case for all the type and not capitalising the beginning of each new beginning of sentences is to emphasise the fact that at the time, the oppressors overlooked and looked down on her, therefore disregarding her feelings and thoughts. Because this poem and her name is so well known, i thought that instead of displaying her name as text, I wanted to include a portrait of her instead. This desaturated and posterised version of a portrait of her creates a graffiti and atmosphere of defiance which hones in well with the theme of her poem. The image showing her face instantly makes it seem more personal to the viewer’s eye and allows them to empathise and reflect on the words in her poem and what she went through in her life. After researching into Saul Bass’ non film posters, I was inspired to create this poster in this particular style. I wanted to experience with creating the correct balance between colour - yellow background, to the title and body text and image of Maya Angelou.
