what the fuck is this????????
Blog vanished for abt 12 hours yesterday and now I'm terrified to mess with the desktop theme even though the photo post margins are messed up lol.
I don't have extremely coherent thoughts on this right now but I feel that uspol today has been an exercise in the most extreme and dangerous version of "reaction culture" or whatever you would call it. The proverbial zone is so perpetually flooded and people's attention is so divided that a man like the American president has to threaten to wipe an entire civilization off the map just to keep people's eyes on him for a day. Obviously anything taken to the greatest extreme is bad but I really do think we (the collective we) could do with a little less "ooh what's the online consensus about this" and more forming our own opinion based on, yknow. Our lived experiences and knowledge. Especially in this digital age where "politics" has effectively turned into engagement farming via social media soundbites
I actually am gonna be a little mean for a second.
Everyone can do whatever they want forever and your money is yours to spend, etc etc. But my god what is the logic here. In no universe does paying for tumblr premium make you some kind of VIP whose concerns carry extra weight when staff inevitably blows ass on the new big update next week, it just means you give tumblr seven dollars every month. Tumblr is not your friend. This is complying in advance behavior
Anyway
Not gonna lie this new UI design feels genuinely user-hostile to me and seems to have been intentionally engineered to maximize the amount of time that you spend on this website searching for information that was formerly readily available to you. Tumblr wants to monopolize your time and make you obsess over metrics and stats and engagement and dopamine hits. It wants you to constantly scrutinize your output and compare yourself to other bloggers; it wants you looking over your shoulder for harassment; it wants to make an addict of you. I actually stopped using tumblr completely for all of 2024 and most of 2025, and right now I’m ready to drop it again; it sounds cliche but that time away was a genuinely liberating and clarifying experience for me. I’d encourage anyone upset by the change to take a step back from this website for a bit, take your mutuals and your friends with you if you can, and seriously consider how much of your precious life you want tumblr to own.
