hi, can i ask if you have a kind of a schedule for updates? If not, how do work out when to update or not? I’m writing my own fic and I don’t know how to decide when to post a new chapter and was wondering how you do it.

I don’t have a schedule, as my writing is often at the complete whim of my muse and can come and go. But I have a long enough history of doing post-as-i-go fics that I have faith in my ability to work that way.

I think it’s really a matter of knowing yourself? Some people know they are better off not posting at all until the entire fic is done. Others know that they need to bite it off a piece at a time just to get through it. I think it also probably has to do with the sorts of chapters you are posting. For example, when I was writing The Changeling, those chapters were each almost completely contained fics on their own. Meaning I could post one once a year and not feel like I was leaving anyone hanging too terribly. They felt satisfying and self-contained with their own internal arcs, to some extent. Fics that don’t have multiple arcs with various semi-satisfying places to pause, you might be better off not making your readers wait endlessly, sticking to a more once a week kind of update. The chapter should make your reader feel like something happened, that there is some pay-off if you’re going to do it in chunks. I’m not sure if that makes any sense at all. But I definitely know that if I happen to have cliff-hanger chapters, which I rarely do, I will never post that chapter until the following chapter is done and ready to go relatively quickly. Otherwise it just feels cruel.

All that being said, just so long as you clearly mark your fic as a work in progress, readers will be able to make their own decisions about whether or not they are willing to engage with your work. So trust them to make their own decisions. But it also definitely means you can’t blame people for not wanting to risk it.

I was doing daily for a bit because I had a bunch of chapters pre-written. I’ve posted those, so now I am basically posting each chapter as soon as it’s done. I aim for daily, but depending on how much writing time I get during the day/how long the chapter is, it may be 1-3 days between chapters.

So, no specific schedule, but you can reasonably expect a couple of chapters a week. <3

Contemplating a Posting Schedule

Not sure how much attention this blog gets to justify posting it here, but just in case anyone has a spare thought on it... I’ve been considering releasing future “chapters” of Wandercraft on ao3 a page at a time like we do with our original fiction on our patreon. This isn’t really to string you along though. The main reason I’m considering it is that I find it puts the editing work into bite-sized chunks. I’m more likely to get it out on the regular and in the long run, it means you see all of the material sooner than you otherwise would. This is because it allows me to focus on that one page and move on to the next page to keep it regular.  I think it suits my editing process better, maybe, but it would also possibly be less convenient for readers. So...I dunno. When the page isn’t already out there and published, I keep giving in to the temptation to back edit so often it takes me forever to get to the next chapter. So you would really actually be getting the whole thing a LOT sooner, and maybe I’ll release an update notice for when the whole chapter is up (I think ao3 allows those?). Any thoughts?
