It's angry, a crash of lips and teeth and tongue. It's full of fury, but not the one that breeds from hatred but that stems from frustration, from waiting and wanting. Unable to have him, it drove Aleksander madder than mad. The Norseman was more than accustomed to things falling into his lap; lovers, chances, anything he might want. But no, of course, the fiery-headed Scotsman would rebuff him, would avoid and deny him at every turn. It felt like a game, one that Aleks wanted to win more than anything.
Whisky and mead make everything heavy and lazy, kisses and touches alike. They’re half-naked sprawled out on furs before a hearth in the dead of winter, coastal storms howling outside though they are none the wiser. There’s no rush in their affections, the slow drag of calloused hands on scarred skin, mapping the old ridges of bone and new tender valleys of scars, of new skin knitting itself back together. They’re painfully reverent in their tipsy states, low rough chuckles escaping chapped lips as scruffy cheeks drag against bare skin.
Tears make their kisses salty, a purge of emotion leaving not just one but both of them raw and vulnerable. There were whispered confessions under the dark of night when the hearth fire had burned itself to embers and the world was at rest. They hide their confessions in the midnight stars, hide them beneath the covers like children with trinkets they don’t want their siblings to find. They’re both so young still, little more than teenagers, but what they’ve found in unlikely alliances might just stick around for a few more decades.
It's not goodbye. It's never goodbye, not for long in their worlds. Home was calling Aleksander harder than anything else in his life. Had it not been for the need of his people, and the knowledge that shirking his national duties and ignoring his people would lead to his own disappearance, he would set his roots down in the rocky hills of Scotland. Eventually, everything had to come to its blissful end, and their faces stung from the whiplash of a stormy spring morning on the docks in addition to the countless tearful outbursts they’d dealt with since the news had come in of the impending Union.
They’re older now, war-worn and weathered. Their laughs are the same, their joyful antics and playful, childlike affections return as if they had never receded. A first date of sorts, the nerves striking the both of them as if this really was the first time. Something fun, axe throwing and dinner, and Aleks falls for those forested green eyes as he did all of those long years ago. They laugh and joke as they wander through a park after dinner, the both of them trading chaste kisses as they walk. Aleksander’s hand rests just at the dip of Alasdair’s spine, a familiar and yet oh-so foreign touch. There’s a moment of pause when they part, cerulean eyes meeting dark emeralds with a question buried in them that finds its answer as their lips meet once again.
Aleks: Date someone who will drag you outside at 3am to look at the stars.
Arthur: If anyone, and I mean anyone, wakes me up at 3am to go look at the damn sky they will be removed indefinitely from my life.
