In another universe, Cinder and Nyon are known as society's darkest couple - always arriving at the social function in their signature black outfits. Unbeknownst to their acquaintances, their black garb is more than just a fashion statement. When La Farfalla contacts them by a letter left in Cinder's handbag at a late afternoon luncheon with several other well-to-do ladies, Nyon is the first to deduce that the place to strike will be the biggest event in Tartosa's fall season - the Masquerade. Everyone, including the person mentioned in the letter, will be there.
They've done work of the sort before, of course, but never at THE Masquerade - though Cinder has often considered it when her "friends" talk to Nyon with their fluttering eyelashes and coy smiles. That's her partner in assassination, after all, and the ladies aren't very subtle.
