DOING 'BUSINESS' IN NEW YORK CITY
Despite forceful objection from their children, moms do have to pee. On occasion, moms will even allow themselves to do so, in public restrooms, with children and/or babies in-tow. In New York City that can be difficult. Finding public a restroom is challenge enough, and then they are often a ‘for reals’ shit show. Why must you defecate on the floor next to the toilet? IT’S RIGHT THERE. Mental illness blah blah blah.
In my case it gets tricky because I have two kids, so one is usually in a pack on my front as I push the older one in a stroller. Raise your hands if you’ve mastered peeing with a child in the pack. Nice work. Now, how about changing a tampon?
Once upon a time, I was in the basement bathroom of the Carnegie Deli with one baby in the pack. There was a line out the door and up the stairs and I was dealing with an 'urgent feminine issue'. Once in the stall I realized I couldn’t shut the door with the baby in the pack (tiniest stall ever). I began to panic. Bleeding through my jeans like a 13 year-old girl, I asked a complete stranger to “please hold my baby”…in the basement bathroom of the Carnegie Deli…in New York City.
Despite our (okay, my) biological need to keep schedule, the littles have to pee too. As a professional urban mother, I purchased Le Potette. It’s a small collapsible potty with biodegradable bag liners. It can be used on a standard toilet seat or as stand-alone potty. Is great for travel, and can even fit in your purse - your stupid purse is too big. It’s a modern miracle and will make you skinny and popular.
Its not always pretty. On recent occasion, the boy informed me he had an urgent case of “poos”. We were on the sidewalk in front of the cathedral on Manhattan Avenue, which is a busy thoroughfare in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Le Potette! There we were, at the base of the steps crouched down together. My ass was very much not in my pants (fuck you low-rise jeans) and I couldn’t do anything about it, because I had to stabilize Le Potette for the boy to make a movement…forever.
Another time, we were in Union Square, sans Le Potette *French gasp*, and he had to go potty. I saw grass, which for some reason this said to me "go pee there". So I held him up under his armpits, on the ledge of a retaining wall, pulled down his pants, and told him to go quickly. He. Had. Poos. So there we were taking a dump in the middle of Union Square. Did I mention that I was 8 months pregnant at the time? They should show videos of incidents like this to sexually active teenagers…on a loop, while dispersing prophylactics.
In closing, here’s another segment for the video series: Hey Teenagers, Don’t Make Babies. I was in the single bathroom in the back of the Trader’s Joe’s Wine Shop on 14th street, peeing (or whatever), while nursing the baby in the pack - breast awkwardly tugged out to one side. The boy decides to unlock and open the door, to the store mind you, and just stand there with the door open. Me, on a toilet, breastfeeding, with the door open. Thanks shithead (I love you).
