I’m having a problem with Potplayer where if I try to capture screencaps in PNG from 1080p, Potplayer captures only half the amount of screencaps, resulting in the gifs being too fast and abrupt. Then if I switch the format in JPEG or use lower quality videos (from youtube for example) the problem gets solved immediately and I can get the normal amount of screencaps. Does anybody have idea what might be happening?

Wait wait "get German subs and autotranslate with google" can you elaborate on this?? I've wanted to watch tatort for years but my German is abysmal. I'm willing to do anything at this point 🙃

In short if you have Tatort episode and the subtitles, you can use PotPlayer to autotranslate from german to english

go to Subtitles > Subtitles Translation > choose languages accordingly >

Hi there!! I came across your post while looking through for a solution to the whole 'PotPlayer skipping frames' issue, since it's one I've consistently had. I hope this helps you and anyone else googling to find the issue (since there's not many fixes out there). When you open the player, right click and go to video > video processing settings (it'll be at the very bottom). (1/2)

When this pulls up the processing settings, change the video renderer (it's at the top) from auto to Built-in OpenGL Video Renderer. Other settings may also work, but I haven't tested them. Try capturing the frames and it should work correctly! My number of frames is set to 99,999 but I don't think that matters, and frame is selected with 1. Obviously that's only if you wanna capture every frame, but I figure 2 will work right too. Really hope this helps anyone struggling with this issue! (2/2)

oh my gosh thanks anon! i haven’t tried it yet, but will definitely update this ask when i do and whether or not it worked for me. putting this in the potplayer tag for anyone else who might need it! :)

edit: it’s come to my attention that i’ve forgotten to update this and this worked for me personally! definitely try it if any of you are having problems.

guys do any of you use potplayer? mine is skipping frames even though it has the “every frame” option marked and i don’t know what to do...

are any of you having issues with it? it won’t play .mkv videos at all.

are there any alternatives you all would suggest? or how can i fix it? it was working just fine a week ago.

PotPlayer as an alternative to KMPlayer for making gifs

I’ve struggled with KMPlayer basically since the day I started giffing. It always took 10 minutes to start up, I couldn’t manage to cap the scenes for a single gifset without it crashing (and it never recovered so I’d be forced to shut it down and re-start it), downloaded files constantly lagged, audio fell out of sync for no reason and these are just a few of the issues I had with it on a daily basis. 

When I searched for an alternative, every single giffing tutorial I found seemed to say the same thing: KMPlayer is the best program for screencapping on Windows. But finally I hit the jackpot with PotPlayer. 

I don’t know how/why everyone isn’t talking about/using this program because it’s a million times better than KMPlayer. In the two days I’ve had it, I’ve never made so many gifs. It never crashes, doesn’t lag, the time it takes for a file/DVD to load is less than half the time it took in KMPlayer, it caps scenes slower than KMPlayer which I find a lot easier and you’re not bombarded with ads either. It also has the bonus feature of being able to download a video from URL, which is very handy for giffing from YouTube since it cuts out the process of having to download videos through an alternate downloader. 

If you’re already familiar with KMPlayer, you’ll have no problem adapting to PotPlayer, since it’s essentially exactly the same just smoother and more utilized version. CTRL+G brings up the screen capture box and F5 brings up your preferences.

anyway i really want to make new gifs for this blog but i switched from kmplayer to potplayer cause kmplayer tried to give my new computer like a bajillion viruses and i’m not about that life and for some fucking reason potplayer won’t cap my dvds correctly ?? 

it skips frames even though it’s set on “every frame” and then when it does decide to get every frame which is rare a ton of them end up looking all pixelated and weird ?? 

yet it’s 100% fine with capping downloads which i don’t understand. i might just have to download the show but that will take a while :///

has anyone else had this problem?

Here’s a simple gif tutorial, using PotPlayer instead of KMPlayer. Sorry if everything is choppy in the video. I probably had way too many things open while I was recording this. Also, please ignore the part where I’m clearly having an issue selecting all the layers. The screen recording box was in the way. All you have to do is select the top layer, scroll down and hold down shift while you select the bottom layer.

Also, when resizing your image, you do not have to resize it to 502 and then crop it to 500 later. I just prefer to do that because in the past I have had issues with lines appearing around my gifs when I would post them and they are not pretty. It does not always happen and it is not necessary to go through this process.
