"For my daughter to not grow up the way I did,” she answered. “I don’t want her to have to face what I did when I was younger.”

✧ what is the worst thing you've ever done?

Kat fought but rolled her eyes as she knew she had to answer. “I killed an innocent. He was in my way, and I was in a rage. Nothing to do about it now.”

✧ do you miss fred?

Yes. He was the first one I really started to open up to, and the last one. And we all see how that ended. And every time I look at my daughter, I have to think of him, at least for a moment.

“i think i’m in love with her,” they admitted, tone reluctant. they worked hard to keep this knowledge to themselves. “she can never find out, though.”

“sometimes, but i try not to,” ly said, looking anywhere but at who they were speaking to. “i wonder if they would have missed me. if they would have ever loved me. mum and dad are great, obviously, and i’m so happy with the life i have, but it’s hard to know that from day one you were too broken, too wrong, too unlovable. unwanted.”
