A ceramic and visual artist, Gailan Ngan began her ongoing fascination with pottery at an early age. She now divides her time between her studios on Hornby Island and in Vancouver.

We asked Gailan to write some advice to her past self. She told us to “Play, Play, Play", and "For anyone looking to experiment with the craft, just find someone who inspires you and ask if you can apprentice for them. Sometimes it will work out and sometimes it won’t.”

Everybody [has] a very different idea of what is beautiful, and what they like… A big part of why your pots are your pots is because of the way you sift through the information you're getting.

In an electric kiln, because it’s electric there is always going to be oxidation meaning there is always going to be lots of oxygen in the firing. In gas [this process is] called reduction and there is lots of extra carbon being burnt, [resulting] in less oxygen in the kiln. If you take one glaze and fire it in the electric kiln and then take the same glaze and fire it in the gas kiln it will be a completely different color.
