i’m more trouble than i’m worth || tony stark & pepper potts
Place: Avenger Tower, New York City Date: 12th May 2016
Things between Pepper had been… well, they hadn’t been quite right since the whole Ultron mess and Tony knows he’s got a habit of rolling with ideas before even speaking to any other parties, but that was just who he was.
Case in point: retiring and living out his days with Pepper in peace (which wasn’t something he actually wanted, at least not now, but it was something he thought he should want) and then bringing it up with Pepper who’d looked at him as though he’d recently had a secret lobotomy.
Things had been rough, he’s not gunna lie, but what relationship didn’t come with their ups and downs?
They’d had a blazing row before the MIT lecture and fuck if he could remember what about – FRIDAY could tell him if he really wanted to know, but that would negate the bottle of whiskey he’d drank right after it – but it had ended with her leaving for a last minute business trip, of which she’d only just come back from.
And he was hiding in his ‘shop, watching the cameras as she went about her day; she didn’t come to find him and he certainly didn’t seek her out.
The Accords were the hot topic right now and after spending days and days doing nothing but discussing them, working on a high level prison design that left his skin crawling, he didn’t want to have to go through things with Pepper (who had undoubtedly been given a heads up from the lawyers, who he’d had go through the document before signing) and yet…
Ugh, fine.
Sighing, he pushed himself away from his desk, instructing FRIDAY to shut down and save, deciding to bite the proverbial bullet.
His shirt was creased and a little dirty, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, the top two buttons at his throat undone, his tie long ago discarded; walking into the kitchen, dirty and rumpled, he felt old just standing next to her; there were barely visible lines of stress at the corner of her eyes, the smudge of concealer under her eyes, and yet she’d never been more beautiful.
“So what’re we doing here?” Let it never be said that Tony beat around the bush ever again. “You know how I feel about the silent treatment. I apologised, right? Sent you flowers, didn’t you get them? Didn’t you like them? I should’ve gone for shoes, right? I did consider that.”
