pride is not the word iâm looking for || steve rogers & tony stark
bruised-soldier-heart:
The feeling that he shouldnât be here gets worse the more Tony talks. And it doesnât help that Steve is overly aware of the reasons, of why this is such a bad mixture.
Tony doesnât understand it, canât, not even through any fault of his own. And heâs right about part of what he says - âHi, my nameâs Tony Stark and I donât like being told what to do, nice to meetchaâ - because this is just who he is, how he reacts and will probably always react to certain things.
And Steve knows that he wonât get anywhere with saying that heâs being ridiculously insensitive without even realizing, doesnât even want to give him that kind of ammunition.
What Steve doesnât get is whatâs so hard about this, why Tony seems impossible to understand why this pisses him off. Because the arguments he brings are close to the point but miss it anyway.
Of course the fact that he felt like he couldnât ask Tony for help not for the reasons he thinks, but for something very different he canât possible mention though, makes things even harder.
âJesus Christ, sit down, Cap. Fuck me. Iâll go. Whatever, right? Youâve somehow managed to turn this into me being an asshole by assigning someone a nickname that youâve decided to take an issue with ââ
âYouâve done that without my help,â Steve wants to say but doesnât, not even when Tony continues.
â â which, actually, by the way, thatâs what I do, do you see Bruce getting his dick in a knot because I call him Big Green? - whilst ignoring the fact that I was actually offering to help you fucking find your beau. You donât want my help? Fine, just say that next time, donât turn something that isnât an issue into one instead.â Iâm filling up and then heading down to the âshop; believe it or not, I know when my presence isnât wanted.â
âI told you, Tony, Iâm done.â Heâs not going to sit back down, and he isnât going to just pretend that none of this happened either. âYou know, you could just trust me that I didnât act to make a point of not including you. Thatâs what this is about, isnât it?â
Capâs just stood there, staring at him like some gormless asshole, and Tony canât help but to roll his eyes, mutter a soft âwhateverâ under his breath and head into the kitchen to pour himself another cup of coffee. Fuck this asshole. Getting all precious over a nickname and speaking to him like heâs scolding a child, the condescending star spangled wearing prick.Â
He was never going to stop calling him Binky.Â
(If heâd just ignored him, like Rhodey did with his nicknames, then he wouldâve moved onto something else but no, he had to take an issue with it - and on the tail end of refusing to let Tony help, which just really made things so much better - and now he was going to make sure that every moment he got, heâd use Binky. Fuck you, Captain America and your self-righteous bullshit attitude.)Â
âI told you, Tony, Iâm done.â
âYeah, yeah, I heard you,â Tony muttered in reply, pouring his coffee and clutching the mug to his chest. And then, louder so Cap could hear him from the kitchen as he stirred in creamer. âTactical retreat sounds so much better than giving up, doesnât it? Whatever makes it easier to sleep at night. For me, itâs a fifth of whisky, but to each their own, eh?â
âYou know, you could just trust me that I didnât act to make a point of not including you. Thatâs what this is about, isnât it?â
Coming out of the kitchen, he raised a brow. âWhat is this, kindergarten? You think Iâm pissed because Iâm not apart of your BFF Circle Jerk? No,â he cut a hand through the air, shaking his head. âLetâs get this clear right now. This team? Is a joke. Youâre a joke. For someone whoâs been lauded as being possibly âthe greatest tactician in historyâ, youâre falling short. You donât use all resources available to you and you know what, I get it - Binky Boo doesnât wanna be found and youâre respecting that by cutting your own nose off to spite your face. Excellent. Tell me, whereâs the problem in me looking regardless? If I find him, cool - you know your precious little assassin is safe and, you know, you can make sure his Hydra brainwashed ass isnât going about killing people, weâre kinda meant to keep an eye on threats like that, donâtcha think? - and if I donât, then cool. Nothing gained, nothing lost.â
âBut no,â he added, tightening his jaw, âyouâd rather sit here and chew me out like some misbehaving preschooler because Iâm picking on the amputee kid. And you know what, Iâm out, Iâm done. Iâm going down to the âshop to fix Natashaâs Bites because, unlike you, she knows to ask someone else for help when she canât do something herself. So, we done here? I think weâre done here.â
