the scariest horror game
I played that indie horror game, PowerDrill Massacre. Happy Friday the 13th.
Powerdrill Massacre is ridiculously intense, I love its aesthetic and execution but it's honestly too stressful to play. Normally jumpscare games wear off after 1 or 2 deaths but this didn't. 90% of its scare factor is really due to the really horrible sound when the killer shows up contrasting strongly with the normal quiet background noise, but it does have a strong atmosphere besides. Honestly what is most impressive is that it's managed to make jump scares actually have longevity and each time you're never really prepared (The game play is very strongly trial and error so it's basically a case of walking around trying to find keys, memorising where he turns up and avoiding it). At the same time though, it's not really an enjoyable type of scare? Like, you're really on edge but it doesn't have the kind of rewarding element that slower burning atmospheres and scares have and it gets exhausting very quickly, to the point where I simply didn't want to play, Still its definitely worth playing as what I think is one of the best executions of a jumpscare focused game and it really matches its 80s video nasty aesthetic well. It's just the case that in being so good at jumpscares, it kind of shows the inherent flaws in relying on them. Don't get me wrong, I liked it but its scares just aren't the type I tend to enjoy. It's effective but not necessarily for me. Also reps for proving that 3rd person games can still work when it comes to a more modern style of horror.
