waxing: what is your proudest accomplishment?

There are two that come to mind, one for my professional life and one for my personal life:

In my professional life, I'm most proud of serving as editor-in-chief of my college newspaper. That job taught me a lot about balancing work and personal life and taught me how to be a manager. I was also incredibly young and I know I had several people who thought I was too young or too immature to have that job. On some levels, I agree with that, but I also produced results as editor. I led the paper into becoming an actual NEWSpaper and not focusing so much on feature stories, but actually covering things that mattered. I also helped lead the team in changing how we produced the news (fewer newspapers, more online presence), which went into full-effect the year after I was editor and continues to this day. And at the end of the year, my team's hard work had paid off, as we took home dozens of awards at the annual collegiate conference we went to. This included the highest level award given to a college newspaper at the conference, which hadn't been awarded to the paper in 20 years (and has only been awarded once since, to a group of the staff led by students I trained during my final year of college).

In my personal life, I'm most proud of rebuilding my life in Texas. My career in journalism didn't work out and there weren't really jobs for me in my hometown. I ended up getting a job in retail, which I never thought I'd work. I'm also, for all intents and purposes, an accountant now, a far cry from my old career. And yet I'm happier than I ever was working in news and I make way more money than I ever did, with a fraction of the stress. This second career allows me so much time to focus on things I want to do (especially writing) and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I also live in a fantastic apartment with great neighbors and my life is on a much better path than it was five and a half years ago when my journalism career ended and I was unemployed.

earth: where do you feel most at home?

Sitting at a desk (whether it's my home office desk, my work office desk or any desk) with a laptop/computer in front of me, a story idea floating through my mind (and usually outlined in a nearby notebook) and sitting down to do the work of writing. I'm able to check out from the world and escape into my mind and write.

I also feel at home if I'm inspired to write something and I'm simply outlining the story or making notes about what I'd like to include.

Basically any time I'm writing, no matter which part of the process, I'm home.

cosmos: what’s one thing you wish you could say to someone you are no longer friends with?

Hoo boy, where do I begin?

I would say, "How dare you abandon me the way you did. After everything I did for you and supported you in ways others did not, how could you just abandon me like that? You couldn't at least do me the courtesy of telling me goodbye, either in-person or over the phone or through a simple message? You walked away. You were arguably the single most important person in my life and you just cut me off and you disappeared.

"And by the way, thanks for making it difficult for me to make friends because I have hard time trusting that something like that won't happen again.

"But, it does make me smile to know that I'm better without you."

I'd also have to restrain myself from getting physical cause I know I could inflict a lot of damage.

I imagine if this friend attempted to apologize, it would very much be in the vein of the Stabler and Benson reunion in 2021, only I'd be a lot colder toward this person than Benson was to Stabler. And I wouldn't be open to rekindling a friendship, even if this person was in pain and needed me.

And to end this on a not so heavy note, that final line is taken from an Evanescence song ;) It's their song, Better Without You, and the line "It makes me smile to know that I'm better without you" speaks to me on several levels of how my life is better without things from my past, including this friendship (though it did take me a while to get to that point)

Hello, I saw some of your recent posts and I wanted to say that you’re feelings are valid. I know we haven’t interacted personally but I have followed your account and what was his account for a while. From one girl to another I understand your pain and your emotions are completely valid. Grieving a relationship can be so hard but I want to remind you that you are strong and can can get through this. I hope you are able to surround yourself with people who make you feel loved and find little ways to enjoy the holidays. I know it’s difficult now but I promise it won’t always hurt this much forever.

Harvest, ghost, cider, amber, frost and maple!

harvest - what fictional character do you most identify with? Why?

This one is tough for me to answer because there aren’t really any characters who closely resemble me. At least in my opinion. Though if I had to say which character I identify with, it would probably be Leia. She’s always been my favorite character of all time and I relate to her sense of duty being something that takes top priority, even when it maybe shouldn’t. I used to be real bad at that when I worked in news and let my work consume my life. Nowadays I’m much better at that work/life balance, though I do make work a main priority, if not my only one.

ghost - is there someone that you miss having in your life?

Aside from family who live long distances, yes there is someone. I don’t talk about this friend much, partly because our friendship ended badly. It’s sad to think about how close we were when I think about how the friendship ended. But I do miss our friendship and the way we bonded over our shared interests was unlike any friend I had ever had, up to that point. I’m largely over it now, as it’s been five years, but it still hurts to think about that.

cider - a food that you disliked as a child but now enjoy?

I used to not like strawberries. It’s weird because when I was a toddler, I’d eat strawberries like no tomorrow but then when I hit like 5 or 6, I stayed a way from. I didn’t really start enjoying them until I was probably 11 or 12. It’s super odd. I’m also weird in that I only like the strawberry fruit. I don’t like strawberry flavored things (namely strawberry milk and ice cream; blegh!)

amber - share an unpopular opinion that you may have.

One that’s super relevant right now: Halloween Ends is an incredible movie. Everyone moaning about it wanted nothing more than a mindless slasher movie. Newsflash: y’all got that on the last movie. Halloween Ends is a perfect way to end David Gordon Green’s “Thrillogy” and it you look beyond the surface level, you’ll see that. There’s a lot at play in that film and it shows realistically how society engages in victim blaming, with much of Haddonfield turning on Laurie Strode and blaming her for Michael’s rampage.

frost - if you could give some advice to your younger self, what would you say?

The same thing I tell myself nowadays: “Stay afraid, but do it anyway.” Lovely advice from my beloved Carrie Fisher, whose 66th birthday was today.

maple - is there a hobby / skill that you’ve always wanted to try but never did?

I’ve always kinda wanted to play the piano. I don’t know what it is about it, but I feel like I would have loved playing the piano growing up. Part of it probably has to do with my love of Evanescence and since their music contains a lot of piano, I’d get to play it. Can’t really do that with the trumpet, which I did learn how to play. Plus, I’d love to be able to play the Halloween theme song!
