POWERRR!
Etienne Kinsinger, Germany
Finally got around to watching NWA Powerrr.
So right away, it’s totally different than anything else out there. And that’s mainly because they’re emulating the old studio shows from the 80s. That’s kinda cool, because I don’t think that format is inherently obsolete; the right people can reinvent it for the 2020s.
That being said, a lot of little details feel like intentional throwbacks where they don’t really need to be. They’re using big chunky microphones and simplistic NWA logos for no apparent reason except that’s what they had in Atlanta 35 years ago. The first show opens with a bunch of newspaper clippings and Jim Cornette recalling Channel 11 or Channel 17 or whatever-the-fuck channel TBS was before it became a cable network.
Retro has its place, especially in wrestling. But the biggest obstacle to rebuilding the NWA brand has always been that nobody can make an argument for rebuilding it except “it used to be there.” That’s not a message that engages people too young to remember the NWA’s best years. If all they can do is appeal to nostalgia, this thing isn’t going to last.
I’m hoping Billy Corgan and his people can make this work, but I’m not terribly optimistic.
Preparation is everything … 👊
