24.5.17 / fourth week of teaching placement and it's going so well!! been teaching full days this week and have a helluva lot of marking to get through but I'm having the best time - the kids are absolutely lovely - can obvs be little shits but they're truly good children :')

I'm a student teacher in a primary school at the moment and today at lunch I pulled off the skin of my banana and then the bell went for kids to return back to class. I looked down sadly at my banana which I had hoped to enjoy slowly and savour but I would have to eat quickly. It was at this point that the other prac teacher (who has an issue of saying mildly inappropriate things around students) I'm with decided to chime in with one of her classic "accidental" lines "don't worry sweetie, just DEEP THROAT it". I don't know about you but I tend to not make references to oral sex while in a primary school

I recieved some beautiful cards from my prac kids today - and even some of the tougher older boys wrote really sweet things. It made my heart cry!!!

So one more day and im no longer a 'pretend' teacher. I could be called up the bat at any minute.

I really stopped the other day, sat back and reflected on my 5 year journey to get here. It feels amazing!

This my friends is what one 15 week unit for a senior term of Visual Arts looks like. It is approximately 28,000 words when you add up lesson plans and resource sheets. Keep in mind that for the whole unit I have only extended 5 lesson plans! and it DOESN'T include the 30 page PowerPoint that goes with it.

For anyone that wants to throw me the 'teachers don't do anything on their holiday's' argument at me right now - I may just hit you over the head with this document!

(so this is for university - I'm not on holidays - but this is what teachers are making on said "holidays")

Back to prac

Went back to my prac school yesterday dor one of my orientation days before my next 6 week block. Basically its to get back and see what the kids are upto and plan out next terms units.

I am very excited to say that some of the students recognised me and were visibly excited and pleased to see me back yay!

I have a different mentor teacher this time, and as much as I loved my other mentor teacher, I am REALLY looking forward to working this this lady. She is in charge of integrating literacy into the visual arts in a way that meets NAPLAN standards AND in charge of integrating Indigenous perspectives into the class so that is really exciting. I am going to end up with a lot of amazing resources.

I have to organise a gread 9 drawing task based on metamorphosis, a grade 10 drawing task based on Indigenous perspectives, a grade 11 VAS class doing clay heads and a grade 12 VAS class.... not sure what they will be doing yet - will depend if they finish their task from this term.

And of course this will be my last ever prac so I will have my interview soon too eep!!

More detentions.....

3 detentions today :( Very deflating seeing i had the rest of my classes running so smoothly i almost had to pinch myself!

They were during sport today - the girls don't want to play so getting them to sit out is what they want! But their behaviour was so disruptive I had to do something, so they were separated, phones confiscated (as per school policy because they grabbed them out), and have follow up detentions with me tomorrow.

My supervising teacher was away so I was looking forward to telling her my successes with my year 10 Art classes and now i have to add this one.

I know these things are expected but I was so excited about the prospect of having a perfect day!

The naughty ones....

I don't know why but I feel like I have a real soft spot for some of my so called naughty kids. While I am standing there and taking them through step by step with my teacher voice so that they actually DO something.... I am secretly giggling inside and intrigued by their spunk!

I actually look forward to see what they are going to do for me!

First few days of prac

I have started my 4 week block now after my 2 observation days and I have thrown myself in the deep end.

Because the students will soon be working on their major projects, my time to teach small lessons I have designs is limited so I just jumped straight it.

Yesterday I taught a lesson I design from a few different tutorials I found online turning a panoramic image into a 360 degree planet. I was really excited about this class until about 15 minutes into a 70 minute tutorial and we had completed the first planet!! That was ok I had to back up images for the students to turn into planets themselves, but they didn't match up neatly so they spent the rest of the class clone stamping phew! The students when asked how they liked it; even said they liked it better then some of their other tutorials. phew!

Today my supervising teacher was having half a day off which is so totally fine - we went through the lesson so that I could help what ever sub turned up complete the lesson (you don't get a visual art teacher subbing). I went in early and set up the classroom with notes on the board and an OHT projector etc. The bell goes - NO TEACHER! ok.. so i know these kids - I have observed them 4 times now so I bought them into the classroom - surely the sub is just late... 10 minutes later. STILL NO SUB!! So on my second proper day I taught grade 10's all by myself. That class has a few notorious students but I managed to keep them all on task and get them mostly completing their work.

Phew what a start to my prac!!!
