The Practical Life Area !
Maddie’s Fruit Salad
Maddie being one of our oldest students did not need much time to make her fruit salad. In fact she only started her prep work on Friday. She had dispelled some of the apprehension of her younger classmates on Thursday - that the fruit salad would not be ready in time for Pizza Friday. “I can make it really fast,” she reassured them.
After an initial tussle with the apron, Maddie got her fruit out, beginning with the apples. The corer needs replacing was the verdict when it appeared to have blunted over the years. So she received some help coring the apples and then on it was smooth sailing. The consensus was to keep the peel on as it was “really healthy for humans”.
The strawberries were next, culled and diced; the raspberries and blueberries were washed and added and then finally mixed up. When it was ready, Maddie observed that the fruit salad had red, white and blue fruits. “Like our flag. That’s why I chose these fruits,” Maddie explained. It was a hit! We had just enough for everyone and a mini serving for Maddie’s family.

Cleaning the classroom and hallway for Gallery Night is an important part of building a sense of community, pride and ownership of the space the children see as their space.
We used a ready made pizza dough to make pizzas. The students customized their pizza - with toppings of cheese, mushrooms and basil to choose from! They had rave reviews of the pizzas they had made - it works every time, the more the children are in the ingredients and the preparation of food, the more they are committed to trying it!
